Cheney says if Kerry had been president, Soviet Union likely would still exist

The Soviet Union might still exist and Saddam Hussein might control the Persian Gulf and possess nuclear weapons had Democrat John Kerry been president when the United States faced those regimes, Vice President Dick Cheney said Saturday.

"I think it's a good thing that he wasn't in charge," Cheney said.

Kerry asserted Friday that had he been president during the war in Afghanistan, terrorist leader Osama bin Laden would be in captivity or dead. The Democratic nominee has long criticized President Bush for abandoning the pursuit of the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks so that U.S. forces could invade Iraq and topple Saddam.

Contending that the Massachusetts senator was "claiming that the world would be a whole lot better if he had been president," Cheney suggested to supporters at a rally that he believed the world would be far worse off.

"Let's go back to the 1970s when John Kerry was saying that we should only deploy U.S. troops under the authority of the United Nations," the vice president said, citing a statement Kerry made in 1970 after returning from Vietnam service. "One way the world might look if he had been in charge is, we would have ceded our right to defend ourselves to the United Nations."

Cheney said Kerry campaigned for the Senate on a platform of opposing major weapons systems that, during the Reagan administration, helped win the Cold War. "So if John Kerry had been in charge, maybe the Soviet Union would still be in business," the vice president said.

Kerry voted against going to war in the Persian Gulf in 1991 after Saddam had invaded Kuwait. "So if John Kerry had been in charge, Saddam might well control the Persian Gulf today," Cheney said.

Stopping the funding for the Nicaraguan Contras after bring back a peace agreement with Daniel Ortega of the Sandanistas (which was worthless). Blocking the vote on the Vietnam Human Rights Act in the Senate in 2001, which tied U.S. aid to Vietnam's human rights performance, and had passed by a 410-1 margin in the House of Representatives. Kerry, chairman of the Senate's East Asian and Pacific Affairs subcommittee, said in a statement at the time that he and fellow Vietnam War veteran Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) "are concerned that denying aid to Vietnam would actually slow human rights improvements." Many Vietnamese living abroad, along with human rights campaigners, say conditions in Vietnam have deteriorated in the three years since Kerry blocked the legislation.

Persuading the MIA/POW Senate committee to vote unanimously that no POWs existed in Vietnam in order to open up trade with Vietnam (his cousin C. Stewart Forbes, CEO of Colliers Intl, received a contract for a huge commercial deal worth at least $905 million to develop a deep-sea commercial port at Vung Tau). How does Kerry define captured?

Does He mean captured as in inviting bin Laden to come live in one of his guest houses or captured as in helping to put bin laden in the White house?

Cheney absolutly right. In the 1980s the liberal elitist said Reagan was simple minded for believing freedom would prevail in eastern Europe and said that we'd have to make concessions to the Soviets. Now, the same people call Bush simple minded for believing freedom will prevail in Iraq and Afghanistan and say we must make concessions to the terrorists.

The Soviet Union was destined to collapse. Their backward economy mandated it. President Reagan simply accelerated the process with his bold governing and leadership. However, while he dealt with the ruthless Konstantin Chernenko in a manner deserving of the former head of the KGB (who made Rooty Poot Poot look like a piker), he embraced Mikhail Gorbachev as a man who could pull the Soviets out of their 75-year nightmare.

Albanian weapons added to Lugar-Nunn program

Chemical weapons in Albania left over from the country’s former Communist government will be destroyed next year under a program started by Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind. It marks the first expansion of the non-proliferation program outside the former Soviet Union.

The Bush administration formally approved the use of $20 million to pay for the elimination of 16 tons of the chemicals. The money is part of the Nunn-Lugar program, created 13 years ago by Lugar and former Sen. Sam Nunn, D-Ga., as a way to speed up the destruction of nuclear, chemical and biological and other weapons in former Soviet republics.

“The original Nunn-Lugar bill was concerned with the former Soviet Union because that is where the vast majority of weapons and materials of mass destruction were,” Lugar said. “Today we must be prepared with money and expertise to extend the Nunn-Lugar concept wherever it can be usefully applied.”

Under the non-proliferation program, 6,300 nuclear warheads have been destroyed, as well as hundreds of ICBMs, nuclear air-to-surface missiles, submarine missile launchers, nuclear submarines, bombers and nuclear test tunnels. Since its beginning, the Nunn-Lugar program has spent about $5 billion.

“Russia will continue to be a major focus,” Lugar said of the expanded program, “but emerging risks must also be addressed in the Middle East, Asia and elsewhere.”

After all...Kerry VOTED against going to Kuwait to stop Saddam's invastion there (even tho the UN was behind doing so! Talk about FLIP-FLOP!) and worse, talk about a man who makes the WRONG DECISIONS consistently.

We need a man with a heart for JUSTICE in our Oval Office. Not a coward who has consistently voted to trash our military throughout his entire career as a senator and a MAN who cannot be bothered to do his job as a senate intelligence committee member!
