On November 2, the entire civilised world will be praying, praying Bush loses. And Sod's law dictates he'll probably win, thereby disproving the existence of God once and for all. Heady times. The US election draws ever nearer, and while the rest of the world bangs its head against the floorboards screaming "Please God, not Bush!", the candidates clash head to head in a series of live televised debates. It's a bit like American Idol, but with terrifying global ramifications. You've got to laugh.
Or have you? Have you seen the debates? I urge you to do so. The exemplary BBC News website (www.bbc.co.uk/news) hosts unexpurgated streaming footage of all the recent debates, plus clips from previous encounters, through Reagan and Carter, all the way back to Nixon versus JFK.

Watching Bush v Kerry, two things immediately strike you. First, the opening explanation of the rules makes the whole thing feel like a Radio 4 parlour game. And second, George W Bush is... well, he's... Jesus, where do you start?

The internet's a-buzz with speculation that Bush has been wearing a wire, receiving help from some off-stage lackey. Screen grabs appearing to show a mysterious bulge in the centre of his back are being traded like Top Trumps. Prior to seeing the debate footage, I regarded this with healthy scepticism: the whole "wire" scandal was just wishful thinking on behalf of some amateur Michael Moores, I figured. And then I watched the footage.

Quite frankly, the man's either wired or mad. If it's the former, he should be flung out of office: tarred, feathered and kicked in the nuts. And if it's the latter, his behaviour goes beyond strange, and heads toward terrifying. He looks like he's listening to something we can't hear. He blinks, he mumbles, he lets a sentence trail off, starts a new one, then reverts back to whatever he was saying in the first place. Each time he recalls a statistic (either from memory or the voice in his head), he flashes us a dumb little smile, like a toddler proudly showing off its first bowel movement. Forgive me for employing the language of the playground, but the man's a tool.

So I sit there and I watch this and I start scratching my head, because I'm trying to work out why Bush is afforded any kind of credence or respect whatsoever in his native country. His performance is so transparently bizarre, so feeble and stumbling, it's a miracle he wasn't laughed off the stage. And then I start hunting around the internet, looking to see what the US media made of the whole "wire" debate. And they just let it die. They mentioned it in passing, called it a wacko conspiracy theory and moved on.

Yet whether it turns out to be true or not, right now it's certainly plausible - even if you discount the bulge photos and simply watch the president's ridiculous smirking face. Perhaps he isn't wired. Perhaps he's just gone gaga. If you don't ask the questions, you'll never know the truth.

The silence is all the more troubling since in the past the US news media has had no problem at all covering other wacko conspiracy theories, ones with far less evidence to support them. (For infuriating confirmation of this, watch the second part of the must-see documentary series The Power Of Nightmares (Wed, 9pm, BBC2) and witness the absurd hounding of Bill Clinton over the Whitewater and Vince Foster non-scandals.)

Throughout the debate, John Kerry, for his part, looks and sounds a bit like a haunted tree. But at least he's not a lying, sniggering, drink-driving, selfish, reckless, ignorant, dangerous, backward, drooling, twitching, blinking, mouse-faced little cheat. And besides, in a fight between a tree and a bush, I know who I'd favour.

There are lots of reasons for supporting Bush, but one additional, very small reason, is to put it to guys like this lowlife swine, Charlie Brooker.

I am not in favor of assassinations, but I am in favor of punching jerks like this in the nose. Since I can't do that, I would just as soon win the election.

Come over here and take a look at GWB in person instead of listening to all the BS sent overseas by the WUOM (washed up old media). Then these questions will be answered.

You're quite right about that. How about those people over at the Guardian who concocted that plan to have Euros send anti-Bush letters to voters in Clark Co., Ohio? Fact of the matter is, Guardian is a left of center newspaper that's not shy about voicing its dislike of Bush.

The American leftists and the European socialists view any violent action, broken law or outrageous statement toward our President as justified since he is a simple minded, Evangelical Christian conservative. Their view of the world is such that the ends justify the means, as the idea of moral absolutes on right and wrong do not exist. The greater good can be served if Bush supporters are intimidated and Bush ultimately defeated. They could then propagate their doctrine of on demand abortion, acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle and socialistic ideas (for which America pays for not only our own recipients, but would foot the majority of the bill for the rest of the world, too).

If the leftists in this country and our supposed allies in Europe spent as much time bashing those terrorist muslim groups as they do President Bush, perhaps the war on terror would be further along. The unfortunate truth of the matter is, these haters view the social conservative and evangelical Christian a graver threat to them and their way of life than they do the fundamentalist muslim. Anyone who states that a supreme being and the individual should have authority and responsibility, not the government, is a threat that must be dealt with. That is the underlying, fundamental reason for the hatred of George W Bush and it scares me for our country where we will be if Kerry is elected.

One of Ohio's finest replied to the Guardian that if we hadn't saved their lousy a$$es from the Nazis, they'd all be goosestepping around Buckingham Palace. I'm not surprised the Guardian decided to call it quits on a lousy idea.

They do and they don't care. Calling for the death of President Bush is common on that forum. Since the site is in Sweden and run by a U.S. hating Euro, the mods aren't allowed to delete stuff like that. Then again, all but two of the mods would agree with it. Airliners.net is overrun by Euros, U.S. liberals, and Al-Qaeda loving Arabs, who are as bad if not worse than DUmmies.

We do not know what kind of childhood this man and his cohorts had, perhaps they have a spouse that beats them, a child who questions their authority...I would like for these people to have a nice, long acid bath. Wouldn't that be warm and snuggly?

To be effective it would need to be a digit at a time and no sodding off would then be necessary as they would fall off! I'm sure my idea seems gentle to you, but I am trying to save you a mess to clean up when its all over.

Although your idea would give immediate gratification, this would perhaps linger longer(unlike their bent tossers). Just a thought...

They did this for attention. The guardian isn't a real paper with good journalists or columnists with real things to say so they just write up incendiary stuff to fire people up and draw attention to themselves.

I lived in England for over 6 years. I am very familiar with all the broadsheets. For the benefit of those who don't know about the spectrum from left to right there are Observer, Guardian, Independent, Times, Financial Times and Telegraph.

In the US most papers fall between the Independent and Observer.
