Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004 11:15 a.m. EDT NY Times Flashback: Paper Reported Saddam Transferred High Explosives

The New York Times claimed this week that hundreds of tons of high explosives had been removed from the Al-Qaqaa weapons depot while the facility was under U.S. control.

But Times reporters knew way back in Feb. 2003 that the removal process was instigated - not by looters or insurgents after the U.S. liberation - but instead by the government of Saddam Hussein.

On Feb. 15, 2003, the Times reported on an address to the United Nations Security Council by Mohamed ElBaradei, the UN's chief nuclear watchdog. In quotes covered extensively by the paper, ElBaradei shared his concern about the removal of high explosives from facilities like Al Qaqaa

Bad news is the Kerry campaign won't care -- I heard a sound clip on Rush's show of him giving a speech today and Kerry was sreeching like a hysterical girl about these missing weapons. Folks, if this is so horrible that it has Kerry screaming about it, then doesn't that just re-inforce Bush's case for going into Iraq to begin with.

Who wants a Commander-in-Chief that screams and rants like he did today - I would be embarressed if I were a Dem.

As an "aside," let's look at what the US Congress and the main drain media knew about Saddam's exportation of WMD back in the 90's. Maybe America should have a deeper dose of regression therapy:

Disregard my FReep mail, it's now working.

This says it all about this issue. Too bad those sKerry supporters at the NY Slimes don't read their own paper.

I specifically remember when the IAEA said Iraq was moving this stuff to mine cement, whatever, I do remember the story in the run up to war.

Sure signs of desperation in liberaldom, LOL.

Just a thought...

Is it possible that some of this stuff could have been used on board some of the aircraft downings? My mind thought immediately of the "shoe bomber" and his attempt to light off his high tops... Could this stuff have been used in 9/11?

I am convinced that the stalling of the UN, France, Germany, Russia, and China was deliberate, to give Saddam time to clear out that ammo dump and others.

I remember that fourteen month "rush" to war. It makes sense now. They are even more corrupt than we think.

a little more on this is here:

http://www.al-jarida.net/Baradei-report.html

Our review of these documents suggests that the carbon fibers sought by Iraq was not intended for enrichment purpose, as the specification of the material appear not to be consistent with those needed for manufacturing rotor tubes.

In addition, we have carried out follow-up inspection, during which we have been able to observe the use of such carbon fibers in non-nuclear-related applications and to take samples. The IAEA will nevertheless continue to pursue this matter.

We have also continued to investigate the relocation and consumption of the high explosive HMX. As I reported earlier, Iraq has declared that 32 tons of the HMX previously under IAEA seals had been transferred for use in the production of industrial explosives, primarily to cement plants as a booster for explosives used in quarrying.

Iraq has provided us with additional information, including documentation on the movement and use of this material, and inspections have been conducted at locations where the material is said to have been used. However, given the nature of the use of high explosives, it may well be that the IAEA will be unable to reach a final conclusion on the end use of this material.

The UN, NYT, CBS, ABC are in collusion with John Kerry in an attempt to run a smear campaign on a sitting President of the United States and simultaneously undermine our military confidence and embolden the terrorists.

This whole thing reeks of George Soros influence.

The New York Times won't be printing any retraction any time soon, at least, not until after the election.

I sent a letter to the NYT yesterday and this is the response received:

I appreciate your concerns about The Times's reporting on the explosives missing from the Al Qaqaa site in Iraq. However, I think it is much too early to come to a conclusion that there is error here. I note three factors in particular: NBC News's clarification of their early report; The Times's on-the-record citation of the unit commander who arrived at Al Qaqaa on April 10 asserting that his troops did not conduct a search; and, finally, some mixed signals from the White House.
This story will, I am sure, continue to play out over the next several days. If The Times is indeed in error, that is certain to become clear, and I will say so in print. Until then, I can only suggest that you -- and I -- examine each charge and countercharge very carefully, and examine the evidence fully, before reaching conclusions.

Yours Sincerely,
Daniel Okrent
