Election 2004: Our choices

Oklahoman Editorial
President: Republican George W. Bush

The war on terror requires a leader with the courage and resolve to stay the course, even in the face of extreme adversity. The war and related security issues are the driving concerns in this year's presidential contest between George W. Bush and John Kerry. The United States is going through a different trial by fire in Iraq. News from the front is troubling, and terrorist tactics test modern Americans' will to see the mission through. We believe President Bush merits re-election because of his superior clarity on the task at hand and his demonstrated ability to be unwavering through difficulty. Sen. Kerry is serious and intelligent, but his multiple positions on Iraq create doubt about his commitment and ability to achieve real victory there. Unlike Bush, Kerry offers no guiding vision. For these reasons, we endorse Bush for re-election.

U.S. Senate: Tom Coburn

Critics wondered why Tom Coburn decided to run in this race, since after choosing to leave the U.S. House in 2000 he wrote a book spelling out his disdain for the goings-on in Washington. Coburn says he was driven by concerns about the nation's health care system and burgeoning government spending. Enacting reform on both fronts will be priorities in the Senate. He advocates changes in the tax code, the tort system and in workers' compensation. In addition, his election could help keep the Senate in Republican hands, which we believe is vitally important. Coburn's choice of words occasionally left him backpedaling during his campaign against Democrat Brad Carson, but as he said in a TV ad, "What I say may not always be diplomatic, but it will always be the truth."

Today the Oklahoman put all of their endorsements together and at the top of the editorial page in big bold letters complete with two large pictures -- one of President Bush and one of Dr. Tom Coburn, the Oklahoman went on record to tell everyone to vote for these two gentlemen and then had some other candidates listed.

It was great to open up the paper -- wish I could put the editorial page all on here because it was a full page.

They also endorsed my Republican State Senator Jonathan Nichols, and my State Rep Thad Balkman and another of our State Reps Doug Miller and State Senator Jim Reynolds -- all Republicans in my County.

If I could find the pictures, I would post them -- great pics of Pres Bush and Dr. Tom.

Great way to start my morning. I skipped the editorial page in the liberal Norman Transcript except for local candidates where the local editor has say and he endorsed all Republicans except one Dem incumbent.

It is so great that the state of my birth, Oklahoma, the state I grew up in, Kansas, and the state where I will die, Texas, are all so rock solid for GW

I have always thought that the Daily Oklahoman had gotten pretty liberal, but this is great news for my Oklahoma Born Hysband. His great-grandfather took him to see Harry Truman when he came to Oklahoma City, but it didn't take.

Except for OU/Texas there is so little difference between Texas and Oklahoma -- lived in both and the people are the friendliest in the Country IMHO!

As OU/Texas, we started beating UT in 2000 when Pres Bush first ran for President and just to make sure he wins again this year, we beat Texas for the fifth straight year! :)

As OU/Texas,

The worst traffic jam I have ever been in was on I35 between Gainesville and Oklahoma City when Texas fans were heading to OU. It was a mess.

To ALL Freepers and Lurker voters:

GO to the polls and vote for Bush. Take your friends with you to do the same. If you know any Zell Miller type Democrats that support Bush and they are voting for him, take them as well.

Vote EARLY to avoid the rush, and remember:

IGNORE ANYTHING IN THE MEDIA YOU HEAR (i.e., making a fast, early call in Florida for Kerry, etc.). WE CAN AVOID A REPEAT OF THE FLORIDA ELECTION DEBACLE OF 2000 THIS YEAR IF GOP TURNOUT IS STRONG, imho.

Tulsa World is liberal; Oklahoman has the most conservative editorial pages I have ever seen for which I am very grateful! :) Edward Gaylord before he died gave all those millions for the new Journalism College with a brand new building so there would be one Journalism School that leaned right!

Very Good!

It is good to see there are some newspapers that still have integrity.

The Oklahoman is one of the few newspapers, that I will buy.

This reconfirms my faith in this newspaper.
