Texas Death Row Inmate Commits Suicide
Yahoo ^ | AP

Posted on 11/04/2004 3:43:23 AM PST by Michael Goldsberry

HOUSTON - A death row inmate was found hanging by a sheet in his cell in an apparent suicide, state prison officials said Wednesday.

Deon Tumblin, 27, was found Tuesday evening, officials said. Efforts to resuscitate him at the scene failed and he was pronounced dead in the prison infirmary.

The prison system's inspector general's office was investigating.

Tumblin had been condemned for strangling a 75-year-old woman at her home in 2000, then taking her car.

He arrived at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, northeast of Houston, in early 2001. He did not have an execution date.

We should put a plaque in his honor in the cell and make sure all death row inmates are provided with bedsheets. The needle is cheap enough, but the cost of litigation is not.

How thoughtful of him! Its double-licious - saves the taxpayers some of their hard-earned money and takes out the trash at the same time.

We should have a whip-round for a Deon Tumblin Memorial Toilet or something. I'll spring for the 1 x 4 brass blank for the plaque.

What is wrong with this picture?

Efforts to resuscitate him at the scene failed and he was pronounced dead

A death row inmate

Seems he saved the state some money. Does it make sense to make 'efforts to resuscitate' someone who is supposed to be put to death?

"Hey, come back to life....so we can execute ya!"

Yes, I caught that too. I've always wondered why they so carefully swab the skin with alcohol where the death needle gets inserted too. Are they afraid the inmate will drop dead of a skin infection before the drugs take effect?

Nice guy. NIce to see he took matters in his own hands. He saved the state alot of trouble and money.

Am I supposed to be sad about this?

He deserved to be hanged, but was not.

Good point.

But either way, it's a sure bet that he won't be out killing any more little old ladies.

Good riddance to the POS.

Now, the problem will be the "life's lottery" litigation from the family.

They will sue for umpty-gazillion dollars for "deprivation of companionship", "negligence", "failure to protect", etc, etc.

Now that that horse's ass (2), John (Breck Girl) Edwards is out of a job, he'll probably represent them and they'll settle out of court for an undisclosed sum.

(Sigh) It never stops.

Sorry to be a bucket of cold water, but...

This guy had only been on Death Row a short time. The appeals process, lengthy though it is, does serve a purpose to ensure the convicted is irrefutably guilty prior to execution. This process never took place for this prisoner.

There have been prisoners exonerated who were farther along in the process than this guy. I'm not saying this is the case here, but it is the responsibility of the state to fully examine the conviction. In order to do this, the state has to keep the prisoner alive.

We can only imagine the degree of psychological pressure that falls on death row prisoners. It should be no surprise that they would become suicidal. The state should exercise care to make sure they are not able to kill themselves.

He's dead. The desired result has been gained. Rather he died by his own hand or by the actions of the state, his life is forfeited. His action, suicide, was the direct result of the state acting for the people of the state.

Congratulations, Convict Tumblin!

Perhaps Convict Tumblin has provided us with a spend reduction method.

Each death row convict should be issued a "get out of jail free" kit including a very sharp razor blade, a length of rope with a noose at the end, a large bottle of cheap sleeping pills, and a pint of rotgut whiskey.

Then, they can either wait until the state exacts it's punishment, or "do it themselves".

They tried to resuscitate him, after he had been dead how long? If they had succeeded, there likely would have been brain damage resulting in eternal medical care, as he surely wouldn't be eligible for the death penalty due to his sudden diminished capacity.

Do the capital letters mean you are yelling?
This case is nothing like the example you offer. His life wasn't taken by another person, public or private. He died by his own hand. Justice served.
