Candidates who spent more than $1 million of their own money trying to win election to Congress in 2004 struck out in nearly every case. Eight made it to the Nov. 2 election, but only one was victorious. The spenders, how much they spent and how they fared:
Blair Hull, D-Ill.; $28.68 million; lost Senate primary.
Doug Gallagher, R-Fla.; $6.59 million; lost Senate primary.
Jack Ryan, R-Ill.; $4.01 million; won Senate primary, then dropped out.
Ben Streusand, R-Texas; $3.49 million; lost House primary.
James Oberweis, R-Ill.; $3.01 million; lost Senate primary.
Tom Ravenel, R-S.C.; $2.94 million; lost Senate primary.
Russ Darrow, R-Wis.; $2.83 million; lost Senate primary.
Andrew McKenna, R-Ill.; $2.41 million; lost Senate primary.
Michael McCaul, R-Texas; $1.97 million; won House election.
Cliff Oxford, D-Ga.; $1.86 million; lost Senate primary.
Tim Michels, R-Wis.; $1.76 million; lost Senate election.
Capri Cafaro, D-Ohio; $1.66 million; lost House election.
Robert Lamutt, R-Ga.; $1.62 million; lost House primary.
Erskine Bowles, D-N.C.; $1.55 million; lost Senate election.
Jeanne Patterson, R-Mo.; $3 million; lost House election.
Jack Orchulli, R-Conn.; $1.33 million; lost Senate election.
Ed Broyhill, R-N.C.; $1.19 million; lost House primary.
Jack Davis, D-N.Y.; $1.16 million; lost House election.
Jerry Springer, D-Ohio; $1.13 million; decided not to enter Senate race.
Kirk Humphreys, R-Okla.; $1.03 million; lost Senate primary.
Karen Saull, R-Fla.; $1.03 million; dropped out before Senate primary.
E.J. Pipkin, R-Md.; $1.02 million; lost Senate election.
And the biggest loser of all and he wasn't even a candidate--drum roll--GEORGE SOROS.
This one in particular gives me a deja vu thrill... another viper from the Clinton snakepit goes down!
Looks like a pretty bad investment if you ask me. Bottom line: if you can't get a party to put some money into your campaign, you aren't too likely to win.
Let's not forget that Haim 'Power Rangers' Saban gave $7 million and Steve 'are you sure I'm the father Liz?' Bing gave a not too shabby $5 million.
BINGO!!
Ping
Socas in VA10 doesn't meet the requirements for this category?
Bottom line: if you can't get a party to put some money into your campaign, you aren't too likely to win.<<-- Kind of a basic by old Constitutional standards..Its about the ideas and who wants to help..Its certainly changed...but the concept is still there
Socas only dropped $349k on his race.

Does this mean that N.C. can finally bid adieu to the political ambitions of its native son?
Wimp.
Ha ha Bowles never had a chance. I'm just glad the Democrats let him lose two open senate seats to us. Several other candidates would or may have been tougher.
At least our government isn't susceptible to being bought.
I guess we've been blessed by our enemies.
Bowles has a fork stuck in his head, he's done. But insane John Edwards may try and run in 2008. That should last about a month or so. What a Bozo! LOL
It would actually be funny, if it weren't so sad.
That concession speech (By the way, what imbecile advised Kerry that having his running-mate give him that asinine introduction was a good idea?) was a literal disaster.
The only So. Dems that even have a shot at capturing the nomination the next time around are Bill Nelson and Blanche Lincoln.
If the party had any vision at all-which they don't-they'd nominate someone like Sanford Bishop.
I won't be holding my breath.
