We Were Soldiers (2002)
Mel Gibson, Greg Kinnear, Madeleine Stowe, Sam Elliott
Rating: TV-14-V , CC

Friday, November 5th @ 9pm(ET)

In a place soon to be known as The Valley of Death, in a small clearing called landing zone X-Ray, Lt. Colonel Hal Moore (Mel Gibson) and 400 young fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons, all troopers from an elite American combat division, were surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. The ensuing battle was one of the most savage in U.S. history. We Were Soldiers Once...And Young is a tribute to the nobility of those men under fire, their common acts of uncommon valor, and their loyalty to and love for one another.

It will be awesome watching this again knowing the results of our last election!

The absolute number one fear I had and was depressed until the election results came in was that a lying traitor and coward like that scum Kerry who did what he did to the Viet Vets would be made CIC over our brave militray

I am relieved but still is a depressing thought that 48% of American voters were willing to do just that

I've never seen it...

I'll NOT give out a "spoiler", but look for this:

the cryptic meaning of a sign in the airport near the end of the film...

When the colonels wife and the other lady walked the telegrams around base housing... Man, it gets to you real fast.

I was with the 2nd Marine Air Wing on Tuesday and Wednesday at Camp LeJeune / MCAS New River this week. Nothing makes Marines nervous except the possibility of having a traitor elected as your CIC. There was a huge sigh of relief, pride and joy on Wednesday. Now they know they can do their jobs as trained and finish what they started. Regarding the 48%:

Ending sucks. Ruins the whole movie. Read the book and skip the movie.

Yep, that was the same part of the movie that I just lost it. It doesn't matter how many times I watch it either. This is going on today too. We need these reminders from time to time or I suppose some do. Are we worthy of the sacrifices made on our behalf by military families and soldiers?

Some of us are, some of us aren't, but that's OK.

In the end, each of us sacrifice for those we love. Be it the battlefield or what we do in everyday life. That's just the way it is, and should be.

My brother-in-law was in the 1/7 1st Cav. (Airmobile) several years after the Idrang Valley, and they saw combat in the Ashau Valley which many consider every bit as tough as the former.

I was going through jump school at Benning in 63 prior to the 1st Cavs. deployment to Nam, when it was called the 11th Air Assault. A buddy of mine was at the field hospital where they brought in the wounded and dead.

Err. It is a fine film, but no I would not call it accurate. Parts of it are. If you read the book you can get the real story. They Hollywooded the ending, falsified the tactics for camera purposes, etc.
