Distraught over the re-election of President George W. Bush, a Georgia man traveled to New York City, went to Ground Zero and killed himself with a shotgun blast, police said yesterday.
The suicide victim, Andrew Veal, 25, was discovered just before 8 a.m. yesterday when a worker for the Millennium Hotel looking at Ground Zero from an upper floor saw a man lying atop the concrete structure through which the 1 and 9 subway lines run.
The worker, thinking the man was sleeping, alerted colleagues and the Port Authority police were notified.
But when they got to Veal's body, they realized he had killed himself with a shot to the head from a .12-gauge shotgun.
No suicide note was found, but according to a Port Authority police source, family members said Veal, a registered Democrat, was despondent over Bush's defeat of Sen. John Kerry. A second source said Veal, who lived in Athens, Ga., and worked for the University of Georgia, was also adamantly opposed to the war in Iraq.
More than three years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, Ground Zero remains a top tourist attraction, the site rife with symbolism.
Visitors there yesterday reacted in different ways to news of Veal's suicide. Bobbie Jensen, 54, a Republican from Phoenix, said that while she understood how Bush's victory disturbed those...

Thanks for both comments. Reagan was just exactly what this country needed after the Carter debacle.
Tell a lib to jump off a tall bldg. fore something kills him, and he just might do it!
In New York, in perpetuity!
God help his family. Politics is no reason for suicide. Open warfare, maybe. But not suicide. My prayers are with those who knew him. May God comfort their pain and lead them to solice.
Actually, the lower the gauge, the larger the weapon. Witness 10 gauge vs. 20 gauge. So a .12 gauge shot gun might be field artillery-sized or greater. :0]
Notice I said Reagan is, not was, because He is not Dead, He is just away, and that is more true now since 11/2/04. God bless Ronald Reagan, God bless George Bush, and God bless America.
No, balloonhead. It's not a NATIONAL tragedy if a majority of people voted in the guy. Isn't that the definition of "democracy"?
I actually feel sorry for the poor idiot, but moreso for his family. Thanks to him, they will think of losing their kid every time Bush is mentioned or is in the news.
This is the product of our childish culture, where we have "adults" reading comic books, playing X-Boxes and living at home forever (it used to be embarassing just to stay til you were 40--now some NEVER leave). They attach such personal value to elections without applying intellectual distance.
Let me put it this way: I bet this guy hated Bush, but he couldn't have a rational discussion about the issues, name his congressman, or discuss the Magna Carta, Versailles, the Bay of Pigs, or even more recent historical events. But he knew who said "Vote or Die!" and who Springsteen and Michael Stipe were backing for president.
Pray for W and Our Troops
He could have been one of the misguided souls who blames "American imperialism" (which he sees epitomized by Bush) for bringing on the attack.
True, Athens is the home of REM, Michael Stipe, and hundreds of liberal townies. However, in defense of the place I lived for 5 years that also serves as the home of my alma mater, the University of Georgia, we also have the largest college republicans chapter in the nation :)
these vermin need an incendiary send-off to hell
Sad? Yes. But his point is......?????
As for liberals saying they are going to move if Bush won the election,I haven't seen or heard of one actually leaving, it is just more of their rhetoric, so don't anyone hold their breath waiting on the dock to wish them a Bon Voyage!
