Sooner or later Liberals will decide it's GW's fault and by extension, America's, esp. for supporting Israel. If Israel didn't exist, they'd have to invent it. They want nothing less than a worldwide Dark Ages dominated by their religion of hate.
You're right -- the grisly details of Theo Van Gogh's death are being whitewashed by the MSM. God forbid Americans wake up to the danger in their midst. Liberals will never admit they're wrong. (Just listen to their post election alibis.) To admit that moral relativism and multiculturalism are a one way trip to hell, well, it's more than a good RAT can manage! Imagine Hill getting up on her stumpy hind legs and denouncing local NY mosques and mullahs. Not ever going to happen. She'd take the koolaid route first.
If Western Europe can't envision death sentences, they'll have to build internment camps or come up with a pill that wipes out hate and violent impulses. Or lobotomies.

If the president came out and said we're at war with Islam, then we'd have to fight them all at once. This way we pick them off at our pleasure, but the truth is it's worldwide war. I don't think we can coexist with Islam. Some say if we're no longer dependent on foreign oil, that takes away their power base. Sure, but if Arabs have nothing left to sell but sand, they're not likely to be happy campers. We need to come up with some kind of happy pill, pacification gas, something we can force feed them into sanity.
You've put your finger on the answer. Make the manner of their punishment and death so fearsome that they prefer to live quiet, peaceful lives. As silly as pigskin, etc., sounds, we'll probably end up having to do it.
