I'm appalled at my fellow Jews, nearly 80% of whom still don't "get it" about the War on Terror, economic freedom, and school choice.
The Jewish religion fosters respect for the individual and healthy pride in human achievement. Most Jewish teachings are more in keeping with fiscal conservatism than socialist state coercion. On the subect of taxation, for example, we are taught that charity must be voluntary and anonymous to be meaningful.
George W. Bush is a great friend of Israel and all democracies struggling to defend their citizens against terror. Many Jews and Christian Zionists recognize this but continue to clamor for a welfare state, an entitlement society, and the clumsy hand of government in private enterprise.
I thank G-d that Mr. Bush has prevailed against the strident and powerful opposition (The New Yorker, The New York Times, most TV "news" stations, Hollywood, European elites, and brutal Islamofascists).
This election pitted David against Goliath. I'm afraid 2008 will do the same, and we haven't a minute to waste.
It's okay, we got the top 25 percent!! Quality over quantity.
The good news: I live in Manhattan and know dozens of Jews supporting W.
I'm sure, btw, that if you look at the demos, Jews who supported Kerry tend to skew older than those who supported Bush.
Ping
We did indeed dodge a bullet. If Kerry had won, it would have been the end of America and Israel.
What you're sorry for is beyond me.
Look on the bright side, they are coming around.
we try to deal with individuals (vs. groups of people that we broadly paint, excepting democrats of course!) and ideologies here. personally, i am appalled that 47% of the voters chose kerry. but we clearly have big "mo" on our side.
As an evangelical married to a Jew I think I can explain it to you. Last year I spent three weeks in Israel. Traveled all over. Many things became clear. Israelis wanted George Bush to win. They know the realities of the world. American Jews to a large majority live in a false world. This is nothing new however. Look to Moses to understand your people. In fact to understand people in general. Even though they had seen the miracles that brought them out of Egypt and seen God's wonders ... half of them deserted Moses and wanted to return to Egypt.
Again when the remainder who had surved God's purging came to the promised land they had not the faith to go in. Thus 40 years in the wilderness and another great purging. After all this within a few generations of living in the promised land after Joshua conquered it for them ... they devolved into sin and idol worship. That's it in a nutshell. A perfect picture of human weekness and love of the darkness.
That 51% of present day America had the faith and moral character to elect George Bush has surprised me. Surprised and gladened me to a huge measure. Most American Jews do not understand that Israel teeters on a razor's edge and could plunge into the abyss at any time. Frankly I don't think they care. If they did they would be sending their sons and daughters and all the money they could possible spare to save her.
We are not in the clear yet. It will take years of courage on the American people's part to conquer Islam and CONQUER we must. Passification will not get the job done. I am still mostly a pesimist on this count.
We, on the other hand, are still trying to figure out how to compensate for "Jimmah and Tammy-Faye".
I'm delighted that you stand where you do politically. I don't understand the folks who see it the other way. W continues to drive the issue of peace for Israel, and peace, REAL peace, in the Middle East ... there are many reasons to fear john kerry's international (and national) policies. I've never seen evidence that he is any friend to Israel (or anyone but himself, actually).
It is stunning. W is the best friend Israel ever had in the White House. Sheesh. What does it take?!

No need to apologize.
As an opponent of collectivism, I recommend you to decline any sense of guilt. You don't need to ask for forgiveness for the shortcomings of some of your fellow human beings. We know that YOU made the right decision.
Nice essay..BTW, I'm pinging you few seconds on another thread posted earlier..I think you'll find it stimulating..regards..
I am a Christian...spent my career in NYC and many of my best friends then and now are Jewish.
If the democrats had selected "Gentleman Joe" Lieberman, the Republican party might have had a real (but at least dignified) fight.
Lots of folks like me are with you.
You aren't alone. I tried so hard to, rationally, convince my Dim Jew side of the family to vote Bush and they just spewed hatred and anti-Bush talking points back at me. I think they are hopelessly blind.
Daniel my brother- Is that you?
