The Original Angry American Song
CMT, Toby Keith Concert aired 11/09/04

Posted on 11/09/2004 3:28:01 AM PST by gentlestrength

Democrats seem the "squirrely" ones sung about in a concert by Toby Keith on Country Music Television tonight. Merle Haggard called in the show, requesting his old song, "The Fightin' Side of Me." It was the original 'Angry American' song. The lyrics seem to fit, some of our own countrymen:

I hear people talkin' bad About the way we have to live here, in this country Harpin' on the wars we fight An' gripin' 'bout the way things oughta be

An' I don't mind 'em switchin' sides an' Standin' up for things they believe in When they're runnin' down my country, man They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me Runnin' down the way of life Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep

If you don't love it, leave it Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin' If you're runnin' down my country man You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

I read about some squirrely guy Who claims, he just don't believe in fightin' And I wonder just how long The rest of us can count on bein' free

They love our milk an' honey But they preach about some other way, of livin' When they're runnin' down my country, hoss They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me Runnin' down our way of life Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep

If you don't love it, leave it Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin' When you're runnin' down my country, man You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me Runnin' down our way of life Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep

If you don't love it, leave it Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin' If you're runnin' down my country, man You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

Toby's "we'll put a boot in your [democrat], that's the American way" seems a little more timely actually. >:)

That song and Whiskey Girl are just about the only country songs I can abide....LOL

Gotta say I only listen to CW and I'm a huge Toby Keith fan, but I'm tired of these guys who go out and make $$$ off the bravery of our servicemen when they never served themselves. If every single $ they make from these songs goes to help the servicemen and their families great. Yeah, Toby's dad was a hero, but when it came to put it on the line, Toby ducked. Elvis went when he was called up - maybe not the toughest assignments, but I don't think he pulled strings to make it easy on himself.

BTW, another Hag-era American classic: have a listen to Bobby Bare's "God Bless America". Should have been reissued after 9-11.

Gosh, and I had read about some anti-Iraq war & anti-Bush comments Hag had made last year. Maybe he's coming back to the light - or just sobering up.

No matter what, the man's still one h*ll of a singer and songwriter!

I read somewhere that the Hag came out for Demos. I was shocked.

"When Merle Haggard released ''Okie from Muskogee'' 30 years ago, the song made him a right-wing hero. Issued at the height of the Vietnam War protests, it won him praise from conservatives for the line ''We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee/We don't take our trips on LSD.'' Haggard always said the hoopla was overplayed, claiming he intended the song as a kind of jest. And, today, this country legend cum rugged individualist says that conservatives - especially the anti-marijuana forces - have gone too far."

But he could have followed in his dad's footsteps and actually served, not just entertained. I'm not out there trying to make $$ off our soldiers, including the family members over there who share my opinion - love Toby, but he shouldn't make $$ off that one song.

IIRC, that concert was in Fallujah. Sort of a hot zone.

Bob Hope never served either. Is he disqualified from being a great American for his support of our troops?

Just a little.

The Angry American and Beer for my Horses are two of a short list of songs that say it all about what's right about America.

It has been like nails on the chalkboard for four years as I've HAD to listen to country on a TV in the other room...Now suddenly I like it! Their marketing's great...they have "The 40 Best xyz" shows, and get me all caught up on who's who, wanting to buy the music of course. Surprisingly I agreed with Imus, that most the people on the CMA awards really didn't have spectacular voices. Except Alison Kraus. But some of the songs are very good. And fun. And have meaning. But they get do pretty gnarly sometimes, no better than rocknroll.

We all have different callings in life. Toby does a lot of good here with his music and also helps the moral of the soldiers when he plays for them. I think he's a great American and I felt such pride when I heard him play at President Bush's final campaign rally in Texas.

God gave Toby a gift. And Toby has shared that gift with the military and those of us at home. Not all of us can be soldiers.
