This seems to be a kind of wierd way of calculating generosity. Wouldn't it make more sense to take Total Contributions and divide by Total Income to get a percent of contribution. So I did just that. Similar results, but not quite as overwhelming:

How do Teresa Heinz Kerry's personal charitable contributions stack up against, say, Utah's 5.14 percent of adjusted gross income?

She didn't release Schedule A, which itemizes charitable donations / deductions. She only released her 2003 1040, none of the supporting filings.

Kerry Campaign press release says she was 'responsible for more than $4.6 million distributed as charitable contributions, primarily through charitable grants by the Heinz Family Foundation', FWIW.

That's one way of looking at the data. I'm not qualified to say it's better / more accurate / supplies better analysis than what they did. The Catalogue for Philanthroy defines the Generosity Index as:

Generosity Index: The index is created by comparing the rank of each state's average adjusted gross income (AAGI) to the rank of each state's average itemized charitable deductions (AICD). The arithmetical differences between these two rankings are then themselves ranked, resulting in the Generosity Index rank.

Sorry, it's wrong to say Schedule A itemizes those. It's where the taxpayer enters the total for charitable donations / deductions.

Liberals want Big Government to be in charge of charity. They feel if they put government in charge then they wont feel guilty about charitable giving.

One reason why they like to divide society by Race, Religion, Gender and Economic class is in hopes that people will be more reliant on them to create artificial self esteem and self worth for everyone.

Its like the saying "give a man a fish and you have fed him for the day but teach him how to fish and you have fed him for life."

Well liberals get their self esteem from giving out fish.

I have lunch occasionally with a liberal who doesn't tip waitresses. This elite author felt writing about "the poor" and downtrodden was charity enough. I started leaving the tip when we were out -- started worrying about spit in the food. Working people aren't impressed with liberal propaganda in exchange for service.

According to liberals, "Red" states are full of dumb people. Well they're also the most philanthropic states. In the list below Red states voted for Bush, Blue states voted for Kerry. The Generosity Index is compiled by Catalogue For Philanthropy.
