'Anti-Male' Marketing Prompts Complaints

Angry parents and grandparents are letting Verizon Communications know they don't like a new Verizon DSL commercial that makes fun of fathers.

Glenn Sacks, a nationally syndicated radio talk show host, urged his listeners to call Verizon, after learning about a TV ad that shows a father trying, but failing, to help his young daughter with her homework.

The daughter, annoyed by her father, looks to her mother for intervention. The mother tells the father to go wash the dog, orders him to leave the daughter alone, and then yells at him when he is slow to comply, Sacks said.

Sacks told listeners that he "doesn't think Verizon means any harm." But he said it appears that the company - like some others -- has developed a "moral blind spot towards disparaging males."

According to Sacks, "Research shows how indispensable fathers are to their children's well-being....it is tremendously damaging to convince kids that their father is an idiot or that fathers are worthless."

Wow, never realized it till now, but Mr Clean is gay, eh?

If he is saving the day for a woman in this pop culture, he must be and the drawing kinda goes along.

Guys put up with more crap than they should or need to, but are too busy to bother with.

Verizon ain't the only one bashing men. Just listen to any commercial on the radio when a man and a woman are pushing a product; the woman is always the all-wise, all knowing, while the man is a klutz.

Top that off with a sign outside of a Christian school depicting a young female with cap and gown with the words "Educating the next generation of leaders".

It's the whole culture.

I think it was an ex-boyfriend of the Progressive customer woman-- who expects more from a website. She is doing online voodoo on him and his head shrinks and he gets the hotfoot, right?

They don't think he's an idiot-- just someone the daughters would have no interest in talking to for various reasons.

"More commercials catering to the women. Men make the money, women spend it. "

Well, that's not as true as it once was. While there are some households where only the man earns money, they're a minority.

In any case, it's women who make most of the purchasing decisions, particularly day-to-day ones. That's who the ads are aimed at.

Now, if you're a guy, answer this: What brands of the following products do you use in your home?:

Laundry Detergent
Household Cleaners
Coffee
Grocery Items
Hand Soap
Dishwashing detergent
Feminine Hygiene products
Children's underwear and outerwear
Bed linens

Next, who writes the checks to pay the bills?

There's another list, of course, of items that men usually choose, but they're generally large-ticket items.

The father comes home and gives his daughters cell phones and tells them they can all call each other now...the kids look at him like he's an idiot and then the mother tells them they can call their friends too and they jump up and hug the mother and then they all leave the room with the father standing there like a pathetic boob waiting to be hugged.

That one really bothers me. And I won't buy Progresso soup because of the know-it-all women and childish men in their ads.

That's a good commercial-- and they made it multi-culti, too.

Thank God my children had my husband to help with homework. I can manage with English and History, but Math is a nightmare. Enter Dad.

My husband and youngest daughter (junior in hs) sit down to go over her math and chemistry almost nightly. I think they both enjoy the interaction with one another, its nice for both of them.

I have definitely watched this trend in commercial advertisements. Many come to mind. Bashing a man is becoming pervasive in entertainment and otherwise in our culture here in the USA..

BUT what I find much more troubling is the taking of this point to extremes with the increasing number of MOVIES and TV SHOWS that have a theme, whether main or secondary, of women or girls kicking mens butts up one side of the screen and down the other - unaccepatable gender based violence.

Besides being completely unrealistic (women in most cases cant even think about the capability of doing such), it is the direct result of this same old liberal, entertainment fantasy that they would like to promote.

I never cease to be amazed at how hate-filled and violent leftists are. I will be fighting this trend toward developing females as hostile and violent to men. It will never be acceptable in a world where I draw breath. I will teach my sons the same.

I saw a similar commercial, with an eager dad giving cell phones to his wife and daughters in hopes they'd stay in touch with him. They all fluffed him off and stalked out of the room, leaving him alone. It was so sad, I almost cried. This hardly seems a good marketing ploy.

I disagree that it is a joke. It has been a constant demeaning of the male for at least the last 10-15 years. I'll guarantee you that if the depiction of African-Americans in ads were the same as the depiction of males, there would be almost universal outrage and outcry.

Of course, I suppose it is funny--and effective--if one thinks the only role of the American male is the liberal idea of a simple sperm machine and child-support ATM.

"Most commercials use the White Male as the idiot because idiot commercials are funny but it would be racist to use a minority figure as an idiot."

I agree. Even though I am a white male they don't really bother me. A clueless but lovable dolt is preferable to the stereotypes others have to live with.

Besides if you can't laugh at yourself, by default, you take yourself way too seriously. Who wants to be just another spiteful, presumably victimized, minority?

The radio commercials for Activa Travel are also anti-male. In one, the husband suggests a hotel for their anniversary. The tech-savvy wife checks it on Activa and finds a golf course. "What's that?" she asks. The husband stammers. The wife retorts, "Nice try." and vetos the decision.

In another, the wife (a tech-savvy, sharp businesswoman) plans her trip on the computer, announcing that she's decided to extend her "girls only" vacation by an extra day. The husband whines that's it's no fair her being away so long. "Oh, like your comic book convention?" the wife retorts, thus shutting up the husband.

In another, a tech-savvy wife plans a vacation while the husband struggles (ineffectually) with the kids.

In all these commercials, the wife is the smart, tech-savvy one. The husband is whiny and ineffectual.

Yes, it's the GAY AGENDA tearing down our Traditional culture that has lasted for 200 years.
I think it's time to hold them accountable.
No wonder were women get their ideas and attitudes from.
They get those bad attitudes and Ideas what I man is for from the TV and movies, SOAP OPREAS are perverting womens minds and hearts. I want to see TV shows and movies were it shows that man as a leader and the HEAD OF THE HOUSEHOLD, not just another FREEMEAL TICKET FOR A WOMAN and DUMMIE.

You are falling into the double standard trap. It WOULD be funny if it worked both ways, but it is the same tired formula.

The morale of our young men is in the crapper with 20% of some on mind destroying riddlin. Then they are belittled until 57 - 60% of college grads are women. Then women lament that there aren't enough smart men.

Then there they complain about being single parents. Its all part of the nexus of nihilism and it should seen for what it is.

As one of my former NYC village living HTML colleagues said "You know, I just hate middle america" He said that FIVE years ago...
