Jimmy Strikes Again
MIAMI (AFP) - Former US President Jimmy Carter called Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) "a powerful human symbol and forceful advocate" who united Palestinians in their pursuit of a homeland.
"Yasser Arafat's death marks the end of an era and will no doubt be painfully felt by Palestinians throughout the Middle East and elsewhere in the world," Carter said.
"He was the father of the modern Palestinian nationalist movement. A powerful human symbol and forceful advocate, Palestinians united behind him in their pursuit of a homeland," he said in a statement distributed by his Atlanta, Georgia-based Carter Center.
He said that while Arafat provided "indispensable leadership to a revolutionary movement" and played a key role in forging a peace agreement with Israel in 1993, he was excluded from negotiations in recent years.
"My hope is that an emerging Palestinian leadership can benefit from Arafat's experiences, be welcomed to the peace process by (Israeli) Prime Minister (Ariel) Sharon and (US) President (George W.) Bush, and be successful in helping to forge a Palestinian state living in harmony with their Israeli neighbors," Carter said.
Both Carter and Arafat are Nobel peace prize laureates.
Arafat, who died at a Paris hospital early Thursday, was to be buried at his West Bank headquarters after a military funeral ceremony in Cairo Friday.
Carter "will not be attending the funeral," said Jon Moor, a Carter Center spokesman.
Sure Doug. Clinton was both one of the worst people ever to become president and one of the greatest politicians of the 19th and 20th centuries. His presidency was low to low average. Carter's was a total disaster. Maddie Albright's ridiculous diplomacy was nearly as bad as that of the Carter administration, and her pattycake with KJI may yet change my assessment of the Clinton days should NK decide to use those nukes.

It amazes me that anyone gives a rat's rip about what Jimmy Carter "thinks."
Clinton was worse than low to low average. He allowed the terrorist beast to grow and set the stage for 9-11 and the problems we have with terror.
Arafat didn't fail his people because his only "people" was himself. And he was quite successful because he managed to do truly amazing things - reform his image from world-renowned terrorist to nobel peace prize winning statesman, convince administrations of a couple dozen countries to give him billions that he could squirrel away in Swiss bank accounts, preside over one of the most corrupt governments known to man and successfully play the victim in the face of Israeli "oppression," all the while continuing to cultivate an entire culture of violence and evil.
Sure, he never actually got around to utter destruction of Israel, which of course God would never allow, but no matter. He probably loved his wallet more than he hated the Jews anyway.
I'm not sure which is more despicable - Arafat or the media that recreated him.

Meaning what? Even though millions of people KNEW he was a terrorist who was quite willing to blow up Jews in buses, etc., to make a point? Even though they could have had their own land years ago, but Arafat turned it down because he thought it wasn't enough, and now they have NOTHING because of him? The shortness of collective memories is mind-boggling. And the above two illustrations are only two of a vast number of evil things, bad moves, etc., that Arafat directed on his own and with the help of some others who still remain in power over there. Let's see how generous are the remembrances when that money they were hoping to get their hands on in Switzerland (another stand-up country - not) cannot be gotten to. Arafat deserves all the vitriol he's getting now. Unfortunately, he's not around to hear it. My guess is he's pretty busy trying to stay cool, though.
