  • Will the Navy Develop a New Role for the Stealthy Zumwalt?

The three new Zumwalt-class destroyers are in trouble. Originally envisioned as a fleet of more nearly three dozen destroyers, and the weapons that justified them, the Zumwalts have faced delays, cuts and staggering cost increases. As the ships teeter on the verge of white elephant status, could they become relevant again by taking on a new role, that of a stealthy ship killer? The Zumwalt-class destroyers were originally envisioned as a fleet of thirty-two destroyers designed to attack targets far inland with precision-guided howitzer shells. Designed in part to support amphibious landings by the U.S. Marine Corps, the Zumwalts were...
  • GOP's repeal-only plan quickly collapses in Senate

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) says she will not support moving forward with a plan to repeal ObamaCare with a delayed replacement, effectively killing the latest legislative gambit from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). With Murkowski's defection, GOP leaders do not have the votes to move forward to an ObamaCare repeal bill that passed the Senate in 2015, but was vetoed by then-President Obama. Earlier Tuesday, Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) also said they will not support moving to the repeal-only bill. Republicans can only afford two defections if Vice President Pence breaks a tie.

MSNBC host Chris Matthews and MSNBC contributor David Corn believe they know why Republicans have a problem with President Barack Obama’s former National Security Advisor Susan Rice – her gender and her skin color. In discussing how Republicans reacted to Rice, who it was revealed this week asked for names of Trump campaign officials to be unmasked in intelligence reports, telling conflicting stories in the past few weeks, Matthews observed, “Notice it’s always a female? Just a thought.” “By the way,” Matthews, whose wife Kathleen is interim Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party, declared, “this is all after the election....

  • (9th Circus) Court Says Californians Need (10 days) to Cool Off After Gun Buy

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned a lower-court decision that would have struck down a 10-day waiting period for certain firearm purchases. The lower-court decision would have allowed existing gun owners and people with concealed-weapons permits to immediately take possession of a lawfully purchased firearm. [Snip] 9th Circuit Judge Mary Schroeder ... said someone who already owns a hunting rifle may want to buy a larger-capacity weapon that will do more damage when fired into a crowd. "A 10-day cooling-off period would serve to discourage such conduct and would impose no serious burden on the core...

U.S. EPA employees were in tears. Worried Energy Department staffers were offered counseling. Some federal employees were so depressed, they took time off. Others might retire early. And some employees are in downright panic mode in the aftermath of Donald Trump's victory. "People are upset. Some people took the day off because they were depressed," said John O'Grady, president of American Federation of Government Employees Council 238, a union that represents thousands of EPA employees. After Election Day, "people were crying," added O'Grady, who works in EPA's Region 5 office in Chicago. "They were recommending that people take sick leave...

This is one of the best pictures of the new USS Zumwalt destroyer yet. width=1000> There she is on her second (very successful) US Navy acceptance trials and will soon be turnd over to the US Navy soon. They will put her through her paces for the next 18 or more months before commissioning in late 2017 or so. Beautiful and very powerful, modern vessel. The second will launch soon. The U.S. Navy’s newest littoral combat ship had to be towed into port last week after losing propulsion off the coast of Virginia. A statement from the U.S. Navy said the ship, USS Milwaukee (LCS 5), was en-route to a naval base in Little Creek when it lost propulsion Thursday night while approximately 40 nautical miles off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia. The USNS Grapple (T-ARS 53) was sent to retrieve the vessel and tow it to the Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) at Little Creek-Fort Story, where they arrived at approximately 9 p.m. EST on Friday.

Why are we paying their rent again? This woman has been waited on hand and foot for almost seven years and she still has to take pot-shots at America for a struggle she barely knows. It will be very nice to one day have people in the White House who don’t feel so apologetic about the country that gave them everything.

**SNIP** The first of four Democratic debates before voting begins will not take place until mid-October - and three of them are on weekends. If the Democratic Party were trying to keep the audience to a minimum, it could hardly have drawn up a better plan. Equally troubling, candidates who participate in any debate not sanctioned by the DNC forfeit their right to join the official debates. Why would a party want to muzzle its candidates this way? It doesn't take a cynic to believe that the DNC has the Clinton's campaign's best interests in mind. Front-runners almost always prefer...

President Barack Obama said on Monday that he never told his G7 meeting counterparts that the strong U.S. dollar posed a 'problem' for the United States. Having a strong currency typically weighs on the competitiveness of a country's industries and exports. Speaking to reporters after the G7 summit, Obama denied a report by an unidentified French official that he had voiced concern about the strength of the dollar during a discussion of the world economy. 'First of all,' he said, 'don't believe unnamed quotes. I did not say that. And I make a practice of not commenting on the daily...
  • Psychedelic drugs ‘not linked to mental health problems’

TRONDHEIM, Norway, March 8 (UPI) — A new study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has found there is no connection between psychedelic drugs and mental health issues. The researchers analyzed data from the U.S. National Health Survey (2008-2011). The data includes over 130,000 randomly selected adults, including nearly 20,000 psychedelic drug users. The analysis showed people who use LSD or psilocybin mushrooms do not have an increased risk of mental health problems.

Dear Senator McConnell, I mean this with all due respect – you’re worthless. Actually, you’re worse than worthless; you’re the problem. You were better as minority leader. Your steering the Senate is worth than Harry Reid’s corruption. It’s almost enough to make me wish you could switch back places. What happened to all the tough talk when you were running for re-election last year about standing up for conservative principles? It seems like you lost something after November – like your pants fit a little looser, and it’s easier for you to ride a bike. You’re the majority leader of...

A Polish magazine said on Sunday it had obtained recordings of a conversation in which the country's foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, says the country's strong alliance with the US “isn't worth anything” and is “even harmful because it creates a false sense of security”. The wife of a man with prostate cancer posted on her blog a scathing assessment of how Transportation Security Administration agents treated her husband during a security checkpoint, explaining how one proclaimed loudly his state of incontinence while a second one grimaced and snickered.
