On the trail of Kerry's failed dream
The Boston Globe ^ | November 14, 2004 | Nina J. Easton, Michael Kranish, Patrick Healy, Glen Johnson, Anne E. Kornblut, and Brian Mooney

On the afternoon of Aug. 9, John F. Kerry stood on the lip of the Grand Canyon, about to make one of the biggest mistakes of his three-year quest for the presidency. A stiff wind was blowing across the canyon, and Kerry, whose hearing was damaged by gun blasts in Vietnam, had trouble understanding some of the questions being thrown his way. But he pressed on, coughing from the pollen blowing on the breeze.

Would Kerry have voted to authorize the use of force in Iraq, one reporter asked, even if he knew then that Iraq didn't have weapons of mass destruction? "Yes, I would have voted for the authority; I believe it's the right authority for a president to have," Kerry replied, as aides stood by, dumbfounded.

Kerry's answer ricocheted around the political world. Faced with the revelation that almost all the prewar arguments for invading Iraq were wrong -- the existence of weapons of mass destruction, close links to Al Qaeda -- President Bush had nonetheless insisted that he would do nothing differently. And he had been challenging Kerry to do the same, hoping to catch the Democrat changing his position on the unpopular war.

The senator explained to aides that part of the question had been lost in the wind; he thought he was answering a variation on the same basic query he'd been asked countless times: Was it right to give Bush the authority to go to war against Iraq? Kerry had simply given his standard "yes," with the proviso that he would have "done this very differently from the way President Bush has" -- yet the misunderstanding now muddied Kerry's message.

Worried advisers briefly considered issuing a clarification, but feared it might further feed Republican efforts to portray Kerry as a "flip-flopper."

Well thanks for the link. I guess Kerry and Kennedy will buzz around the trough until they keel over from natural causes.

"Kerry, whose hearing was damaged by gun blasts in Vietnam"

Considering the miniscule amount of action he was present for, this is highly doubtful. Just another excuse for incompetence.

Other left wing post mortems attribute Kerry's loss to red state homophobia.

Yeah, right. Flip-flops, MSM carrying his water, maniacal talking heads pimping for him,
back-stabbing the troops now, as he did in the early 1970s, promising to make the US subservient
to the UN, sucking up to France, harassing the USSS agents sworn to protect him, hiding
his $800K yacht that Joe Sixpack couldn't afford the gas to operate, cheating the US taxpayers
out of his Senate paycheck, picking a trial lawyer as a running mate, the running mate's
wife implying riots if they lose, being a hypocrite about the military, being Teddy K. lapdog,
appearing to be a gigolo, having a plan that nobody can see, not doing anything as a Senator
for 20 years, ...

"Not one place in this 7,600 word article is the name Ted Kennedy mentioned."

True. Very interesting. Don't want to mention the name of the King in the same article as the failure/loser?

I read the whole dang thing....did I miss any mention of Teresa's contributions to the loss?

This was really interesting to read, as it made me remember every moment I had of worry, frustration, and anger since 2 summers ago when I knew instictively that Kerry would be the Dems' nominee. He was all they had to throw up against Commander In Chief Bush, and it's really good to find out how they decided to overplay that hand.

"Reporting for duty". I LOVE knowing Max Cleland is responsible for that embarrassingly cheesy line! Maybe soon enough we'll find out what else Cleland contributed to the campaign, via CBS. I'd almost bet the farm he's connected to the memo. And I bet by now Cleland couldn't get Kerry to accept a call if his wheelchair were on fire.

Yeah, I can see how stiff a wind is hampering his ability to hear the questions. It looks dead still to me.

What a great Hollyweird PR photo!

Is that before or after Kerry attempted to get Teresa close the edge?

I recall seeing a photo of a gin/raisin soaked Teresa pulling away from that same area near the edge of the cliff.

Look at all that pollen blowing around up there!

I think there is one photo of Kerry scampering over those rocks as if he is really a self-promoting moron. Sorry, I repeat myself!

Isn't Progressive Insurance one of Kerry's big 527 campaign financers?

If Teresa is worth over 3.2 billion dollars just think how much Kerry has her life insured for!

Hummm....this doesn't sound like the JF'nK of the Newsweek article screaming about his aides losing his "F...ing hairbrush". That sounded like a small, mean crybaby who no one would want to work for or vote for.

The rat lap dogs at the Boston Globus Histericus are rewriting history as usual for their alpha liar, Kerry.

I can't take credit for making that. Another freeper did, and of course, I can't remember who it was.

I just couldn't resist a re-post based on that poster's jump comment!

Another freeper gets the credit for that one! I can't remember who made it, but it was quite ready for a respost!

Your "jump" comment made it the perfect thing to post.

The Grand Canyon episode was when the Kerry Bunch imploded, yet we hardly heard a word about it from the MSM branch of the Kerry campaign. The MSM did NOT tell us so many things. Hellsbells they didn't even ask Kerry the tough questions! Only now is the media eeking out the juicy tidbits and the important meat of what people should have known about John F. Kerry, BEFORE they cast their vote for him. His military records, current health records, current medical/cosmetic procedures, and most important of all, the total dissection of his senate voting record.

I think the best thing to come out of this election, (besides a second Bush term), is that the MSM can no longer claim they don't play favorites. The New York Times, CBS, and the rest of them lost all credibility with voters and frankly, I think that clear revelation gave Bush more votes than any other side issue of the campaign.

George Bush was running against the MSM and John Kerry.
God Bless America, he beat them both!

And just for the record: There was something online today about the French loathing George Bush because of his religion. One of the talking heads (wish I remembered who), wisely pointed out how it didn't trouble the media or the French, when Bill Clinton thumped his Bible in black churches, or when John Kerry started showcasing his ash covered forehead and his Scripture quoting....because the media knew Clinton and Kerry didn't mean it. (They didn't tell us that either!)

Yes. This election cycle drew bood from old media. They will never fully recover. They deserve the press they're getting, in fact they deserve a lot more than they're getting and why a majority of people are getting their news from alternative sources.
