On the trail of Kerry's failed dream
The Boston Globe ^ | November 14, 2004 | Nina J. Easton, Michael Kranish, Patrick Healy, Glen Johnson, Anne E. Kornblut, and Brian Mooney

On the afternoon of Aug. 9, John F. Kerry stood on the lip of the Grand Canyon, about to make one of the biggest mistakes of his three-year quest for the presidency. A stiff wind was blowing across the canyon, and Kerry, whose hearing was damaged by gun blasts in Vietnam, had trouble understanding some of the questions being thrown his way. But he pressed on, coughing from the pollen blowing on the breeze.

Would Kerry have voted to authorize the use of force in Iraq, one reporter asked, even if he knew then that Iraq didn't have weapons of mass destruction? "Yes, I would have voted for the authority; I believe it's the right authority for a president to have," Kerry replied, as aides stood by, dumbfounded.

Kerry's answer ricocheted around the political world. Faced with the revelation that almost all the prewar arguments for invading Iraq were wrong -- the existence of weapons of mass destruction, close links to Al Qaeda -- President Bush had nonetheless insisted that he would do nothing differently. And he had been challenging Kerry to do the same, hoping to catch the Democrat changing his position on the unpopular war.

The senator explained to aides that part of the question had been lost in the wind; he thought he was answering a variation on the same basic query he'd been asked countless times: Was it right to give Bush the authority to go to war against Iraq? Kerry had simply given his standard "yes," with the proviso that he would have "done this very differently from the way President Bush has" -- yet the misunderstanding now muddied Kerry's message.

Worried advisers briefly considered issuing a clarification, but feared it might further feed Republican efforts to portray Kerry as a "flip-flopper."

Democrats now talk about reaching out more to Christians and all that - but there is no way Christians are going to vote for pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-atheist, anti-prayer liberals.

...underestimated the effect of the swift boats... It pissed him off, people attacking his Vietnam service."

Another urinalist's slanted interpretation: "people" ???????
"people"?, these are by no means just "people", these are over 270 men who served with him or his unit.

"the White House wasn't about to let Kerry use faith to his advantage, and portrayed him as out of step with the Catholic Church..."

In all fairness, the Catholic Church also had an opinion in this matter:
SEN. JOHN KERRY “EXCOMMUNICATED,” ACCORDING TO VATICAN RESPONSE

"attacking Kerry's record on issues of special interest to Catholics"...

I guess "attacking" is one way to phrase it...another might be "presenting facts, with corroborating evidence provided by THE VATICAN"

Oh flipping hell - will they not get over themselves: they've lost and it's their own bloody fault - they have no method by which they can connect with the majority of America, as was made crystal clear by the election - all they can depend on are the coastal and urban areas where Francophilia and minority politics combine substantially to put them over the top.

America's heart essentially beats on the right - until the Democrats understand that, they will continue their decline.

Regards, Ivan

"by naming Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter to show "we're all God's children."

Nice spin Globe. Definately sounds better than: "I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian...", or Edwards'subtle as a flying mallet comment, "And you can't have anything but respect for the fact that they're willing to talk about the fact that they have a gay daughter". Helps deflect the fact that these slurs were part of a orchestrated campaign by Kerry-Edwards in order to attempt alienate Bush-Cheney supporters.

The only thing wrong with Kerry's hearing is, all he hears is himself. Or maybe it was Theresa yelling at him for being a loser.

Trivia: Did you know that the anagram for "John Kerry" is "horny jerk"

"cold eyes, the stony mien...he places his hands on your shoulder...". The "Lurch" analogy never really caught me until just now...I can almost hear that guttural growl he used to do when he would put his hand on the shoulder of some poor, confused visitor to the Addam's estate ...

Hmm-mm. The Teddy Kennedy link becomes very clear now. As
if he couldn't do it for himself, so he would "sponsor"
someone else. It goes way back, to state the obvious.

Hi, CW:

I just finished the Newsweek Super-Duper-Tell-All about Kerry. I could have sworn that the author(s) mentioned that Kerry was suffering from "Walking Pneumonia" in August, 2004.

Jack.

Only kerry could blame the WIND when he makes a mistake!

Took 6 to write this crap?

Mosh pit journalism. It is the Boston Globe after all.

The Globe had a hand in training Jayson Blair in the tradition of such plagiarists as Mike Barnicle and Patricia Smith.

Excellent point.

The selfishness of Kerry and his concern about himself is off the charts.
