Beer guts 'ticking time bomb'
Herald Sun (Australia) ^ | 11-15-04

THE typical Australian beer gut was a ticking time bomb for heart attacks and strokes, a leading authority on diabetes and heart disease said today.

Paul Zimmet, director of International Diabetes Institute, told a health symposium in Adelaide that the Aussie beer gut was part of the deadly quartet of heart disease risk factors which also included high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels and high cholesterol. Also known as the metabolic syndrome, Professor Zimmet said it was already a big threat to global health and would become one of Australia's top three public health issues during the next decade.

"Over 2.5 million Australians have the deadly quartet and with the explosive increase in the number of people with diabetes globally, there is the foundation for a cardiovascular disease epidemic of huge proportions," he said.

"The combination of any two of these risk factors, as well as cigarette smoking as an additional one, is a ticking time bomb."

Professor Zimmet was critical of the present focus on individual attempts at weight reduction and exercise.

He called for wider recognition that obesity and diabetes were negative outcomes of globalisation, which had itself resulted in exercise being engineered out of daily life and in the uptake of a less healthy diet.

I wouldn't want to be around when Mikey Moore goes off.

It's so nice to know that if we just live the right way that we'll never die.

wider recognition that obesity and diabetes were negative outcomes of globalisation

,,, global warming spreads into global fattening. Once all the cigarette factories and fast foods headquarters are relocated in China or the third world, this will solve our problems.

as well as cigarette smoking as an additional one

,,, there was a time when this was the main one.

Not according to the Framingham heart study. It's the longest running one out there and they've yet to find any direct co relation.

Much research points to lower risks of cancer among smokers, including lung cancer.

But we all knew that, it's on the MSM daily.

El Conservador's health bill:

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 305 lb. (down from 325)

Blood pressure: 120/80

Triglycerides and cholesterol levels in blood: Normal

Consummated walker (1 hr a day)

I'm fine so far, but I'm 23, so the belly could come back to bite me in the ass.

It all depends on how you take care of yourself.

did we really need the research

More research is always needed. Read any report on a scientific subject and you'll see that sentence, usually need the end of the article.

If this were the case then a large majority of Germans would be popping like stepped on bubble wrap.

I knew the stuff was dangerous. I'm going to go ensure that no one gets hurt by that sixpack I have in the fridge. It's a dangerous job, but hey, I'm just that kind of guy.

Spend a month at the national library of medicine. Warning, if you get amazed as I got, you might spend three. A few years back there was an area only accessable to doctors. What med school did you 'say' you went to? ;-)

Two large australian studies found smokers to be healthier than non's in all catagories but one.

Check the good ole SG's report of 64, oh that's right all press copies got pulled right up after the 20 minute press conference. But you could check the med schools the book got sent to. Don't get surprised when every med school librarian tells you the same thing. Seems lost. Not to fret a nicely 'cleaned' vs just made it online 6 months ago.

Looking for the meaty part? "we found heavy smokers who inhale deeply had lower incidence than non-inhalers"

Jaw not dropped far enough? 9 out of 10 studies find that asbestos workers who smoke have 50% lower risk of lung cancer.

The #1 cause of lung cancer is a chemical named benzo-a-pyrene. The #1 source is from the combustion of fossil fuels.

Know anything that burns this stuff?
