The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Connect these dots, now
Full Story
"We should have secured the Mexican border."

That could be the pitiful lament we hear from negligent U.S. officials if Al Qaeda pulls off an attack on the United States using weapons of mass destruction smuggled across our southern frontier.

Were that horrendous event to happen, leaders in the administration and Congress would be justly hit with the same question that was perhaps unjustly cast at them and their predecessors after the unprecedented Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: Why didn't they connect the dots?

Authors Send Christmas Video to Bin Laden via Al-Jazeera

Sunday, December 05, 2004 4:00:00 AM ET
PRNewswire

LONDON, December 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Benrik, the authors of the anarchic book "This Diary Will Change Your Life", today released a videotape they have sent to Osama Bin Laden for Christmas via Al-Jazeera.

The video contains a Christmas message to Mr Bin Laden urging him to change his life with the help of the book. Authors Benrik speak to camera in the Osama-style video, with the following message (subtitled in Arabic):

"Peace be with you. Osama, there is too much blood in the world, your ways need to change. This is why we enclose "This Diary Will Change Your Life", of which we, Benrik, are the authors. We are pleased to present you with a copy for Christmas. Follow it day by day in the year 2005 and your life will change. Good luck."

Benrik have sent the video to news channel Al-Jazeera in Qatar, with instructions to pass it on, along with the Diary, as an early Christmas present to Mr Bin Laden. Al-Jazeera is usually the recipient of Bin Laden's videos. Al-Jazeera news editor Ayman Kabbala said: "No one has ever asked us this before, it is a strange request".

Long interesting read.

A nuclear Iran poses extreme threat to U.S.

Orde Kittrie

Armed only with boxcutters, the 19 al-Qaida hijackers on Sept. 11, 2001 killed 3,000 people and caused hundreds of billions of dollars in damage to New York City, the Pentagon and the global economy.

This toll pales in comparison with the damage that would be caused by a “nuclear 9/11” – a terrorist state or group using a nuclear weapon against the United States or its allies. Detonation of a single small nuclear weapon in a U.S. city such as Phoenix could kill more than 500,000 and cause over $1 trillion in damage.

snip

Iran’s track record
A nuclear-armed Iran would be extremely dangerous for a number of reasons. Iran’s hard-line fundamentalist regime continues to blatantly threaten the United States, which it routinely refers to as “the Great Satan.”

In May, on the first day of its new session, Iran’s parliament broke into chants of “Death to America.” At Iran’s annual military parade in September, a long-range missile had draped over it a banner proclaiming, “We will crush America under our feet.”

South Korea asks U.S. to aid in hunt for subs

December 06, 2004 ¤Ñ South Korea has requested help from the U.S. Seventh Fleet in searching for submarines that have frequently been detected in the East Sea (Sea of Japan), a Navy official said.

According to a Navy official, "Kim Jong-hwan, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently asked Vice Admiral Jonathan W. Greenert, the commander of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, for aid in maritime patrol activities using P-3C submarine spotter planes." Admiral Greenert reportedly responded positively.

The request for support follows a failed attempt on Oct. 10 by the South Korean Navy to find an unidentified vessel, presumed to be a North Korean submarine, that showed up in the northern-most area of the East Sea.
The Navy official said that North Korea possesses more than 100 submarines.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Gunfire has been heard and smoke can be seen rising form the US consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Saudi officials say there is an "emergency case".

A correspondent at the scene said shooting broke out earlier this morning followed by thick black smoke.

Both the shooting and smoke died down and then increased again 30 minutes later.

Sky's foreign editor, Tim Marshall, said there had been an increase in 'chatter' over the last eight weeks, indicating a terror attack may have been being planned."

Pakistan: jihadists rob bank

Jihadist fundraising in Pakistan. From the Daily Times:

PESHAWAR: The suspects in the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) robbery case in Swat were affiliated to a banned militant organisation, Jaish-e-Muhammad headed by Maulana Masood Azhar. A wounded robber disclosed this to police interrogators.

A senior police official while quoting a wounded robber, Khalil Ahmad who is in hospital for treatment, told Daily Times on Sunday that most robbers had participated in Kashmir and Afghan jihad and had stolen Rs 2.2 million from the bank for purchasing weapons.

“They looted the bank to purchase weapons for participation in jihad,” said the official who wanted his identity to be kept anonymous.

The wounded robber told the police that the gang leader 21-year-old Farooq Shah had refused to hand over the money to the police when the police commandos surrounded them. “This money should be spent on jihad and was not for returning,” Khalil quoted Farooq as saying before the later blew himself up in a mosque.

A threat to vaporize 100 Muslim cities

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1295170/posts

Back in the days of the Cold War, the U.S. had a nuclear-weapons doctrine called Mutual Assured Destruction, or MAD for short. This doctrine held that if the U.S. were attacked with weapons of mass destruction, or WMD, we would immediately and without debate counter-attack the homeland of the perpetrator in such a way and with such overwhelming nuclear force as to make the cost of the initial attack too much to bear.

For instance, if the Soviet Union or the Chinese would have attacked us with WMD in the Cold War, we would have counter-attacked at the very least by destroying their 100 largest cities. The theory was that once you have destroyed the 100 largest cities of any society, even an evil empire, that society effectively ceases to exist, perhaps for several generations, thus deterring any WMD attack. Variations of this same nuclear doctrine were held by our Cold War allies and advisories, including the evil empire.

Although gruesome sounding, the beauty of MAD is that it worked. Even though both the U.S. and the Soviet Union were armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons, none was ever used. In fact, both sides went to great lengths to establish hardened and redundant command, communication and control systems to prevent the accidental or unauthorized launch of nuclear weapons, fearing the dire consequences.

Five Spanish Cities Hit by Blasts Following Warning From ETA (12/6/04)

Dec. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Five devices exploded in Spanish cities, the Interior Ministry said, after anonymous callers, speaking in the name of Basque terrorist group ETA, told the Gara newspaper that seven bombs had been planted around Spain.

The blasts occurred today in Leon and Santillana del Mar in northern Spain, the central cities of Avila and Ciudad Real, and the southern city of Malaga, said a ministry spokeswoman in a telephone interview. No injuries had been reported in four of the towns, while no information was available for Ciudad Real, said the spokeswoman, who requested anonymity.

The five cities were included in two warnings phoned to Gara by the callers, the paper said on its Web site. The other two places mentioned by the callers are Valladolid, in central Spain, and Alicante in the southeast. Before the explosions were reported, the Interior Ministry said the areas were being evacuated........

Security Badges, Uniforms Lost at Canada Airports (12/6/04)

December 6, 2004 MONTREAL -- Federal Transport Minister Jean Lapierre wants a report explaining how security uniforms and badges disappeared from airports across Canada, CBC News reported.

More than 1,000 uniforms and parts of uniforms were lost or stolen, and nearly 100 security badges went missing over a nine-month period, CBC News reported after uncovering documents from the federal agency responsible for making air travel safe.

"I want a report by Monday morning on all the details of all those elements," Lapierre said when asked for his reaction on Saturday.

Lapierre also gave assurances that all airports in Canada are "now double checking the identity of every employee that comes in."
