Three former Kerry campaign aides, also demanding anonymity out of concerns about alienating their former boss, said they were surprised and disappointed to learn that he left so much money in the bank.

Kerry had roughly $45 million left in his primary campaign fund as of mid-October, according to his Federal Election Commission (news - web sites) report, and could use that as seed money for another presidential bid.

His final report is not due until next month, but officials close to Kerry said he has $15 million to $17 million in that account, with no outstanding debts, after giving the DNC about $23 million and state parties about $9 million since the mid-October report.

In addition, the report showed that Kerry had about $7 million on hand in a legal and accounting compliance fund that he could use for legal expenses in a 2008 campaign. Officials said he raised several million more for that account since the filing. ---------------------------------------------------

Another of many reasons he's called a loser......and a money grubbing hack.

Kerry won't be needing the $$$$, he won't get the nomination in '08. It'll take all that money and more for Hillary to remake herself into a moderate so she'll be able to run!

Can he give it to Hillary's campaign in exchange for a promise for some prestigious position if she wins?

Could you imagine if you were a dem donor and you find out that your money wasn't used for what you specifically intended it to be used for? (course I can't really imagine being a Dem donor, so maybe they are cool with it)

Let's see the Dems go at each other a bit. Get this Spector - Conservative civil war outa the news. :)

This makes no sense to me. $15,000,000 would have bought a lot of ads in the various swing states. It's not like he's going to need the money for his next senate run since he's the incumbent democrat from Massachusetts. He'll win that race regardless. He wouldn't even need it for potential legal challenges if the election had been a squeeker. George Soros would have been willing to cough up almost any amount for lawyers if they had needed them. His wife's worth about $1,000,000,000 so a few million in campaign funds isn't going to affect his personal finances much. Only a moron would try to save some of the money from a close race for a long shot campaign four years from now and I don't think he is a moron.

So the question is, "why the hell didn't he spend it?" Like Saddam's missing WMD's I think there is more here than meets the eye.

But golly, doesn't he owe money on a second mortgage for one of the houses his wife inherited? We aren't so hard-hearted that we'd want him to be second-homeless, are we? And we should cut him some slack -- he probably expected to be spending millions on recounts and legal challenges by now.

From a great DU thread:

When you look at the facts long enough there's only one conclusion:

Kerry is a crook who cheated and deceived and defrauded his constituency. And he wants to hang onto our money that he didn't spend as promised?

F*** him.
