WASHINGTON - The House on Saturday commended the Boy Scouts and condemned legal efforts to limit government ties to the group because of its requirement that members believe in God.
A nonbinding resolution, passed by a 391-3 vote, recognized the 3.2 million-member Boy Scouts for its public service efforts. But the main thrust of the debate was what the House Judiciary Committee chairman, Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., said were the "strident legal attacks" on the group.
The Pentagon agreed last week to tell U.S. military bases around the world not to directly sponsor Boy Scout troops. The warning resulted from legal challenges to government relations with a group that bans openly gay leaders and compels members to swear an oath of duty to God.
The American Civil Liberties Union and others say that direct government sponsorship of such a program amounts to discrimination.
The Pentagon's ruling does not prevent service members from leading Boy Scout troops on their own time. Also, Boy Scouts still can meet on areas of military bases where civilian organizations are allowed to hold events.
Rep. J.D. Hayworth, R-Ariz. said the ACLU's challenge was a "nuisance lawsuit" and he was urging Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to reconsider the Pentagon's position.
"Scouting values, military values, citizenship values, a respect and reverence for a creator are not a violation of the doctrine of church and state," said Hayworth, who was an Eagle Scout.
The measure's sponsor, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said Congress would work "to defend the Boy Scout's ability to continue the fine work that they have done for nearly a century."
Voting against the resolution were Democratic Reps. John Dingell of Michigan, Barney Frank of Massachusetts and Lynn Woolsey of California.
Barney's ticked because they would let him join.
get some legislation that allow the boyscouts to use dod facilities.
And we have to ponder just why it is the ACLU and homosexual community is just so darned anxious to require the Boy Scouts to let gays have overights with young boys.
Tammy Bruce addresses this matter in her book The Death of Right and Wrong.
If athiest don't beleive that they will go to hell, then they can lie and say they beleive in god.
Liberals couldn't defeat President Bush so they have to pick on someone smaller now.
ANOTHER reason why it's a good thing the grown-ups are in charge again in DC.
"W" needs to throw some weight behind the Scouts and out an end to these rediculous assaults on a fine organization.
I've used Scout-taught lessons my entire life and helped me with some basic skills as a single father. Cooking, sewing, first-aid, along with other helpfuls like knots, swimming, safety, the list goes on and on.
Don't encourage him.....
These three clowns need to go.
put an end to these ridiculous assaults...
A perfect example of why gay men should never be allowed within 10 miles of a Boy Scout troop happened here in Louisiana back in the late 70s. A man in his late 30s or early 40s know to his audience as "Mr. Wonder", hosted an afternoon TV kiddy show. He had also gotten invoved with the local Boy Scouts and was by himself taking small groups of them on weekend camping trips.
Well,lo and behold, some of these 9, 10 and 11 year olds started coming home after these weekends and reporting to their parents that Mr. Wonder was having some of these boys sleep in his sleeping bag with him and some had been fondled. You can only imagine the outcry in the community and the ferocity of the reactions some of the dads had. Some were personally out looking for him to inflict a little "southern justice" on him.
When the story broke, Mr.Wonder disappeared, literally. He vanished. Everybody, including law enforcement, believed he had left the country and high-tailed it to Brazil because there is no extradition agreement. But the reality is that he's never been seen again. There were stories for a few years that Interpol was after him but nothing ever came of it as far as I know.
The operative word here is "nonbinding" resolution. It would mean something if they did something. Pandering political opportunism unless there are tangible followthroughs.
I thought Barney liked Boys

I'm surprised Bagdad Jim McDermott was among those that voted against it.
But... only 391 voted for it, so maybe he wasn't there when they voted
Once an Eagle Scout, always an Eagle Scout.
