Here is a confirmation of this from another (US) source:

former Colorado Congressman Bob Schaffer:"

RUSSIAN TROOPS IN UKRAINE"

MP Julia Tymoshenko confirmed that many of the guards are indeed Russians dressed in Ukrainian militia uniforms. They're bedecked in riot gear -- helmets, face shields, 3' riot shields, black uniforms, etc.

The presence of Russian troops here is a very serious international incident. This causes great tension between the U.S. and Russia.

What do you think, Grzegorz ? Russia deploying troops just to protect its assets there, or is it some way to strong-arm the Ukrainian voters into complacency ?

They deploy thier forces for the same reason they did it in Chehoslovakiya..

To shot people dead..

Russians protecting president Kuchma who is hated by 99% of population, and Kuchma doesn't trust Ukrainian special forces to shoot thier own citizens..

Putin stole elections. Yanukovych is a Putin's puppet and criminal. I doubt (and hope) that Russians won't start any open military action - I think that they just want to put more pressure on opposition. We should step in from the west If Russians start open intervention - I hope that western Europe would support us - I've got impression that EU is hardly interested in these events.

Exactly and he knows it. Last week we had a thread on how the Communists take over nations and everything they are doing now was on the thread. They are almost textbook in trying to take the Ukraine back any which way they can. Putin is the worst dictator in years IMHO.

This is one time I think we should stay out of it. The Europeans need to deal with this if it needs dealing with. We have bigger fish to fry than whether or not they have a perfect democracy. I don't see communism coming back in a Soviet Union. I don't think you can put the toothpaste back in the tube. Besides we need Putin when he is fighting alongside us against Al Queda.

We probably will unless condi engages in a little arm twisting later on but it pays to remember that Putin did his best to arm Saddaam with basically anything he wanted until the day we took over there and he is still sitting on a bunch of nucs, I take him very seriously.

By "the west" do you mean France, Germany, Poland and Romania, who lie to the west of Russia, or do you mean
the USA? As if I didn't know. It's time the above did
something about the Communist grab session. It's not up to us to secure their borders. We can't even secure our own!

Witam
Stara taktyka Moskwy! A jezeli chodzi o Putina to juz wiedzie kim on jest dawne stare zasrane KGB.

Lviv anti-riot police units will defend people

An officer of a special police unit from Lviv has given a call to Viktor Yuschenko HQ saying that in case Russian special units will use force – him and his colleagues will immediately leave for Kyiv to defend the people.

"The Europeans need to deal with this if it needs dealing with."

If???? "The Europeans"???? Since when have they "dealt with" anything????

"... bigger fish to fry." Bigger than the relationship between Russia and its nearest large neighbor????

"I don't see communism coming back in a Soviet Union."
Why not, pray tell???? The idea never dies, and Putin is trying to reconstitute the Soviet Union. If he wins this one in Ukraine, he'll go a long way toward that.

As for Putin as an ally ... what about his connections to Iraq and Iran????

The naivete of FReepers in this discussion about the Ukraine situation is an embarrassment.

These probably proof that there is such a thing as a dumb question (but I have to ask):

What exactly is going on in the Ukraine? Are there any 'good guys'?

Aside from the natural national ambitions of the Ukrainian people and the long history of oppression under first the Czars and then the Soviets, is it in OUR national interest to back one side or the other?

No flames please -- I simply have not followed this story.

Nope. Both are not-so-ex-Communists. The opposition was funded by George Soros, and has pledged to remove Ukrainian troops from Iraq. The incumbent party's candidate was backed by Putin.

Iraq war has nothing to do with this elections.

But George Soros most assuredly does.

Soros' involvement makes me extremely suspicious of the opposition. What will he demand in return for supporting this guy? And how much will the US have to pay to bail out Ukraine after all is said and done?
