National Treasure," a surprise box office hit from Hollywood, demonstrates once again the embarrassing gap between cultural elite and the general public.
This splendid adventure movie starring Nicholas Cage drew overwhelmingly negative reviews, and leading critics even predicted its commercial failure. Ordinary moviegoers, however, have expressed gratitude for the film a clever romp with a patriotic heart and a family friendly "PG-rating," spinning an enjoyable yarn about a treasure map left by the founding fathers on the back of the Declaration of Independence. ...

I read a review of it and the writer focused more on Cage's resume and talent than the film; I must have been the last person to learn that Nicolas Cage is actually named Coppola and is the nephew of Frank Coppola.
Never even heard of it till I read this post (girl next door). Ran a google search. The only thing REMOTELY interesting is Sung Hi Lee in it. I think she's gorgeous.
So THIS movie was hyped big time, eh? Doesn't look like anything I'd see, but hey, what do I know? I was looking at one of the higher end 'men's mags' (GQ or Esquire, forget which) whilst waiting for my stepson's prescription to be filled, and it had a lot of 'top 50' lists (top songs, top albums, etc.). I conclude from this magazine that I, alas, shall NEVER be hip, cool, or any variation thereof.
I'm with you, looks like direct to video to me.
Sooner or later corporate guys are going to kick some "elite" butt. This movie's success and Alexander the "Fabulous" failure bring that day a little closer.
So am I, read the profile.
Great Movie! totally fun!
and more evidence of how out of touch most movie critics are!
I would recommend the movie and recommend you take your kids as well.
p.s. Buttered popcorn at my theatre rated: Poor!
You have to suspend disbelief at a plot involving stealing the Declaration of Independence to look at a treasure map on the back, but it's a fun movie. My kids chose NT over Sponge Bob (thank goodness!) and besides having fun, I think they actually learned a thing or two about our history.
True, I had forgot about that. My son never mentioned a word about it, however.
"Ahh said, Put down.... the bunny."
Yes, the plot is far-fetched, but it was good entertainment. I was really pleased that I had decided to take my son. The movie is tamer than most kids' movies these days.
Thanks for the recommendation--I've got a seven year old. Maybe he would like to see it with us. We've also been wanting to see the Incredibles. Probably my two year old would like NT too, but two year olds and movies for adults aren't a good combo.
See post #49--maybe you can take Phillip since you guys have been wanting to see it. It sounds like it would be tame enough for the little ones as well, but probably best not to risk having a rowdy two year old in there--well at least MY two year old is rowdy little dude so I'm thinking we might have to ask Auntie to look after him.
I think a 7 year old would be okay with NT; there were numerous kids at the screening we saw. I think a 2 year old, however, would be bored with NT.
Medved is a very reliable source for movie reviews. I always try to know his thoughts on a movie before I go....
