Annan's Son Took Payments Through 2004 (UNScam update)
New York Sun ^ | 11/26/04 | CLAUDIA ROSETT

One of the next big chapters in the United Nations oil-for-food scandal will involve the family of the secretary-general, Kofi Annan, whose son turns out to have been receiving payments as recently as early this year from a key contractor in the oil-for-food program.

The secretary-general's son, Kojo Annan, was previously reported to have worked for a Swiss-based company called Cotecna Inspection Services SA, which from 1998-2003 held a lucrative contract with the U.N. to monitor goods arriving in Saddam Hussein's Iraq under the oil-for-food program. But investigators are now looking into new information suggesting that the younger Annan received far more money over a much longer period, even after his compensation from Cotecna had reportedly ended.

The importance of this story involves not only undisclosed conflicts of interest, but the question of the role of the secretary-general himself, at a time when talk is starting to be heard around the U.N. that it is time for him to resign, and the staff labor union is in open rebellion against "senior management."

I don't know what is the New York Sun
I've never even seen a 'hard copy'
but it seems to have become THE paper in NYC
where you can find out
what really 'is happening'
and it receives many 'leaks'.

We must end US involvement in this corrupt organization of tyrants, socialists, and America-haters. Get the United Nations out of the US and get the US out of the United Nations!

That would be a foolish move before the U.N. is officially considered irrelevant.

I disagree. Once the US pulls out of the UN, the UN will be irrelevant. Our presence in the UN gives it credibility and legitimacy. Furthermore, we are the single largest source of funding for the UN:

No nation in the world contributes more to the work of the United Nations than the United States. Since its creation in 1945, the United States has been the world’s biggest contributor to the United Nations. The U.S. currently contributes 22 percent of the UN’s regular budget. In contrast, France contributes 6.4 percent, Britain 5.54 percent, China 1.53 percent, and Russia 1.2 percent. Total U.S. contributions to the UN system in 2001 totaled $3.5 billion, including $612 million in assessed contributions to the UN regular budget, $712 million towards UN peacekeeping, and $2.2 billion in voluntary contributions.

The United Nations only has (and only would have) power over the US as long as we grant them that power. We are the world's sole superpower (despite attempts by the Leftist enemies within to abrogate our power and position in the international community), and it's time we start acting like it.

I don't know what is the New York Sun

The New York Sun is a conservative newspaper that was started in 2002.

There was an old newspaper called the New York Sun (it merged into some other paper in 1950, and, after some name changes, it's now defunct). I don't know if there's any relationship at all between the old Sun and the new Sun.

The old Sun is best known for the "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" article; we'll probably start seeing the usual annual references to it shortly.

So the US giving up it's vote in the UN as one of the countries with veto power would be preferred to the US maintaining status in the UN and having a voice in the UN's dislodgement as a world power?

Knee jerk IMO.

What voice the one that tells us to take a hike when we ask for help protecting our country and others from terrorists ?

They crapped in our lap when we went to the security council for help slapped us in the face then spit on us with all there terrorist member states i expected no less !

I cannot understand how you think our vote would count for anything unless we were voting on turning over our soverignty to them then it would be sgreed by all terrorist nations belonging to them that its time for the US to DIE !

I for one think the UN is bad for not only the US but the World as a whole or part !

I agree, however to leave the UN in it's present status and divest ourselves of our position as an input as a founding member to the organization would be foolish before the organization is rendered useless as seen by the rest of the world.

Uhhh... so you're suggesting that the UN--an organization rife with corruption and graft--is going to vote itself out of power or out of existence? Ha, like that will ever happen!

Knee jerk IMO.

How do you define knee jerk? Terminating our affiliation with a proven corrupt and criminal anti-American organization for fear of what they might say or try to do behind our backs? (And how exactly would that differ from how they are operating now?) If that's "knee jerk" by your definition, then I'm all for "knee jerking" us out of there. As I said before, they only have power over us if we choose to give it to them. And how much do you think they'll be able to do without our taxpayer's deep pockets open for them to raid?

Allow me to present an analogy:

You, as a local Chief of Police, decide to form a Neighborhood Watch program with other residents in your area. Of course, most of your neighbors are drug dealers, pimps, gangsters, thieves, and welfare bums, but you idealistically think that you are going to make your neighborhood a better and safer place by trying to work with your neighbors in a socialistic fashion. Being magnanimous (or perhaps just plain stupid), you host this organization in one of the spare rooms in your home, and because you are the wealthiest member, you provide the majority of the funds for the various programs and projects the group decides to undertake. As one of the founders of the group, you get "veto" power over group proposals, but other than that, your vote counts for no more than any other member of the group (including the gang-banger a few blocks down who is constantly shooting up the neighborhood and has killed some of your friends).

Over the years, the group has become more lawless, more corrupt, and more opposed to you in every way. In fact, it's turned into a Mafia-like organization. They plot behind your back to allow and perpetrate more crime in the neighborhood, they try to vote away your property rights, they demand that you pay more money to fund their pet projects (most of which goes to lining their pockets), they try to tell your family members what they can and cannot do, and they stab you in the back at every turn. Furthermore, you learn that the Neighborhood Watch patrols (which are mostly just the gang-bangers in "official" Neighborhood Watch uniforms) are terrorizing many of the homes in the area, stealing property and raping helpless residents. As Chief of Police, you find that often, the criminals that your police force are trying to prosecute, are in cahoots with your own Neighborhood Watch group. Furthermore, your Neighborhood Watch program is "running interference" for the criminals and actively preventing your police force from cleaning up the neighborhood.

Now tell me, at what point would it NOT be "knee jerk" to extricate yourself from this criminal organization and start standing up for what is right, both for you, your family, and for your neighbors who actually want your police to clean up the neighborhood and restore law and order? Are you really suggesting that it would be more important for you to remain a member of this Mafia-like group just so you can maintain a (largely ignored) vote or a veto at their meetings?

No, for your perception of reality doesn't coincide with mine.

The UN organization is a fact. We as a member hold veto power, thus as long as the UN exists it is foolish for anyone to think that we should leave it until it is proved by the rest of the world to be irrelevant and dissolved.
