A soldier's last request.
BLACKFIVE ^

Posted on 12/13/2004 5:30:52 PM PST by katkin

Please help with this one.

Damn, just damn. Specialist David Mahlenbrock was killed by an IED on December 3rd in Kirkuk, Iraq.

I received this email via Soldier's Angels. It's from David's Squad in Bravo, 65th Engineers and they are forwarding a request from David. It appears that David had a special letter sent to his squad in the event of his death. Hold on to your seats, folks:

I called my local am talk station and gave the news desk the info. They are owned by a large media company who owns a bunch of stations. I told the news guy about the story and asked him to pass it on to the other stations in his group.

He was very interested.

I will make sure to listen to see if they played the song.

I will be calling KIX106 (WGKK) in Memphis

Request Line: (901) 535-9106

Have any others from the Memphis area already call them?

Did a Google on this young man's name. The story, with and without the request, is being widely covered, particularly in the New Jersey / Philadelphia area.

I have not read the whole thread yet, but has anyone tried contacting Toby Keith?

Done, KTPI in the Antelope Valley has rec'd my request, although I'm not a big country fan. Easy and honorable request to make.

RIP young man, you've earned it, may the good Lord watch over your family.

Note - forwarded via email to Country Music Television (CMT.COM).

Also, from the news stories about this, one of the groups helping to promote this, Soldiers' Angels, is trying to get Toby Keith to sing at the funeral.

Since I work right here, I'm gonna try to take an early lunch and slip away from work tomorrow to attend this young man's funeral.

Every one of these I've ever attended have just ripped my heart out.

The saddest thing for a Soldier is hearing Taps being played for another Soldier - but it's sobering and serves to reinforce the profound impact these brave warriors have on our lives back here.

We should all be glad we have troops who "get it" and are willing to put it all on the line so that we can go right on being whatever kind of American we choose.

It's just too bad we have so many in this country making such horribly selfish choices about the kind of "American" they choose to be.

This American Soldier will proudly represent Free Republic as Specialist David Mahlenbrock is laid to rest in our hallowed ground of Arlington National Cemetary.

I e-mailed Cat Country 96.1 in Allentown Pa. I hope they step up and do the respectful thing and play the song for our fallen hero.

My father died April 18th just 6 weeks short of his 90th birthday. I DOES still hurt and it ALWAYS will. May his soul rest in peace and may your memories of him eventually bring a smile along with that forever little tear. God bless.

Bless your heart, Diva. I am listening now at the office, looking at this soldier's picture with tears literally streaming down my face, but for once I don't care if anybody sees me. Thanks, AmericanMade for the lyrics.

Cordially,

Warrior's Last Request - Update
Thanks to many of you, but especially those amazing people at Soldiers' Angels, things are rolling in order to fulfill Specialist Mahlenbrock's last request.

Apparently, there are two months per year when Toby Keith spends all of his time with his family. He never violates this rule. So, he won't appear at the funeral to play "American Soldier".

However, he is going to cut a special CD from his home today dedicating the song to Mahlenbrock! He said that he was touched by the Soldier's request.

He's going to get the CD with the dedication cut in time to send to the funeral.

I'm just trying to be a father
Raise a daughter and a son
Be a lover to their mother
Everything to everyone
Up and at 'em, bright and early
I'm all business in my suit
Yeah, I'm dressed up for success
From my head down to my boots

I don't do it for the money
There's bills that I can't pay
I don't do it for the glory
I just do it anyway
Providing for our future's my responsibility
Yeah I'm real good under pressure
Being all that I can be

And I can't call in sick on Mondays
when the weekends been too strong
I just work straight through the holidays
And sometimes all night long
You can bet that I stand ready when the wolf growls at the door
Hey, I'm solid, hey I'm steady, hey, I'm true down to the core

And I will always do my duty no matter what the price
I've counted up the cost, I know the sacrifice
Oh, and I don't want to die for you
but if dyin's asked of me
I'll bear that cross with honor
'cause freedom don't come free

I'm an American soldier, an American
beside my brothers and my sisters I will proudly take a stand
When Liberty's in jeopardy, I will always do what's right
I'm out here on the front line
Sleep in peace tonight
American soldier, I'm an American soldier

Yeah, an American soldier, an American
Beside my brothers and my sisters I will proudly take a stand
When Liberty's in jeopardy I will always do what's right
I'm out here on the front line
So Sleep in peace tonight
American soldier, I'm an American
An American, an American soldier

And a hearty thank you to G. Gordon Liddy for helping us fulfill the last request of this American Soldier.

And to Diane K., THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Keep calling and emailing radio stations - David's family and friends are asking radio stations to play Toby Keith's "American Soldier" on the 15th at 1pm EST with a dedication to Specialist David Mahlenbrock.

Your attention to this request is acheiving amazing results. YOU PEOPLE ROCK!!!

Thank you.
