Los Altos Hills, CA (PRWEB) December 10, 2004 -- On Tuesday, December 7th, in an ongoing controversy at Foothill College, Political-Science Professor Joseph Woolcock filed a grievance against student Ahmad Al-Qloushi for mentioning Woolcock's name in the media. Don Dorsey, Dean of Student Affairs, summarized the grievance as, "Professor Woolcock feels harrased by your (Al-Qloushi) having mentioned his name to the media."

On Wednesday December 1st, Foothill College Political-Science Professor Joseph Woolcock tried to intimidate student Ahmad Al-Qloushi into seeing a therapist because of a Pro-American essay he wrote in Woolcock's class. The thesis of Al-Qloushi's essay is that the US constitution was a very progressive document, which has contributed to freedom beyond America's borders. Al-Qloushi and the Foothill College Republicans defended that intellectual diversity must be respected on campus, and are lobbying to have the "Academic Bill of Rights" adopted as official policy by the college"s elected Board of Trustees. Professor Woolcock's name was mentioned on numerous websites including www.townhall.com/clog and www.davidlimbaugh.com.

"This (Woolcock"s) grievance will not detour us from our goal," said Cori Jenab, Vice-President of Foothill College Republicans. "This grievance ignited a First Amendment rights outrage from the kindling of existing controversy at Foothill College."

"Intellectual diversity must be respected at Foothill College," said Ahmad Al-Qloushi. "This grievance will not detour us from our goal of having Foothill's Board of Trustees pass the "Academic Bill of Rights" as official school policy."

Woolcock filed the grievance through an institutional process normally used by students who experience inappropriate behavior on behalf of Foothill teachers such as an "act or threat of intimidation or general harassment." To learn more about this grievance process, please visit

Is he qualified to give psychological diagnoses? An undergraduate major in Psych is not the basis for such a diagnosis, and practicing medicine without a license is illegal. The student should sue.

I am composing a complaint to the president of the college, Bernading Fong (fongbernadine@foothill.edu) in protest.

Couldn't stand it. Had to pop off the following letter to President Fong:

Dear President Fong,

I was appalled to read that one of your faculty, a Professor Joseph Woolcock, put his political beliefs ahead of his faculty responsibilities by verbally harrassing student Ahmad Al-Qloushi.

Apparently, on Wednesday, December 1, 2004, Political Science Professor Joseph Woolcock tried to intimidate student Ahmad Al-Qloushi into seeing a therapist because of a Pro-American essay he wrote in Woolcock's class.

My review of Woolcock's bio did not reveal that he had earned a license to practice psychotherapy.

Woolcock's intimidation escalated, as this statement from the student attests: "Professor Woolcock went as far as to threaten me by stating that he would visit the Dean of International Admissions (who has the power to take away student visas) to make sure I received regular psychological treatment."

Is this how Foothill College treats it's international students? Toe up to the line or get deported? Isn't false or frivolous complaints against a visa holding student illegal in some way?

Furthermore, Woolcock is filing a grievance against Al-Qloushi for having the temerity to publicly complain about Woolcock's actions! Does this man have no shame whasoever?

I have heard that some professors are unprofessional enough to insinuate their political leanings into their lectures (thankfully, I am not associated with any), but verbally chastising a studend for a different belief, and insisting that he is in need of psychotherapy because of it, is an all time new low in teaching. In fact, it is not teaching. It is abuse.

I trust you will speak to Woolcock and not-so-gently suggest that he change his ways, adopt a professional attitude in his teaching, and drop his grievance against the student before Foothill College becomes a laughingstock in academia. You would be fortunate if the student did not obtain legal representation and sue the college for Woolcock's unprofessional actions.

I would respectfully suggest a full review of his course syllabus and a probationary period of supervised lectures. Perhaps some diversity training as well.

It's time for students to band together to stand up for these pigs who are trying to brainwash young people and dictate how they think.

Fox News had a story today about how the number of "Campus Conservatives" groups in the US has tripled in the last five years from 400 to 1200. And the number of religious groups on campuses has increased substantially too. This is apparently from a book titled "South Park Republicans" (or south park conservatives). Futhermore, many students report that when they write essays the just parrot the teachers philosophy in order to get a decent grade even tbo they "don't believe of word of it".

This means that instead of thinking their own original thoughts, these young people spend 4 years simply spinning their wheels. This is a travesty. Stand up students! Don't take this krap anymore!
