Need help with Windows Media Player (Vanity)
December 12, 2004 | Myself

Posted on 12/23/2004 10:12:54 AM PST by Kaslin

Can anyone help me. I am having trouble with my Windows Media Player. Like when I try to listen to Rush (I am a 24/7 subscriber I get a box that says Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience

I have never had problems with Windows media Player until a few days ago. I was hoping the problem would straighten it self up. I upgraded a coupleof month ago to version 10 from version 9, and I don't have any problems playing Music CDs

Not unless you recently upgraded to SP2, that might be screwing it up.

I've recently started getting into digitizing my music, and I can't figure out how to get the dang library to function the way I want it to. I can't move playlists around, have categories of my own choosing for genres or artists. I'm having a heck of a time.

Yes, what's wrong is that you're using Windows Media Player.

Download Winamp and find a site which streams Rush in MP3 or WMV. I know there's one out there, I used to listen to Rush with Winamp.

Have you tried this? It sounds like Version 10 did not completely install correctly.

Rush 24/7 is different from streaming his radio show.

I would reinstall it if this is happening often.

Uninstall, run Norton SystemWorks/ WinDoctor to clean-up the mess, and fix the registry, and then re-install it.

Configure Winamp to play all WMV files in the Winamp Configuration dialog box under "File Types", and that should take care of your problem.

WLS Chicago streams Rush live in 3 formats.

Get iTunes. I love the way it handles my files. Automatically groups the MP3 files in folders by artist and then by album. Very easy to create playlists. And automatically rips Audio CDs to mp3 without an added codex.

In the last week, I've had nothing but problems with Media Player 10 also. Copying and pasting the error code and going to their forum board (which is about the only thing remotely offering some sort of real help), following all the instructions---and getting nowhere for two days---I did a systems restore going back 2 months ago. Works fine now. Apparantly, we are not alone with Media 10 problems.

BTW, when you find that the Microsoft "support" isn't what it should be, you'll find a link that charges some outrageous fee to talk to a human being.

I've heard the same stories for Windows XP Service Pack 1 installs, nonetheless, I installed it with no problems. Then I heard people having problems with XP Service Pack 2, I installed that update with no problems thus far. I use WMP 10 and have no problems whatsoever. If anything, it's probably nothing more than a remote coincidence that you and Kaslin have the same problem.

To this day, since Windows 95, I've never relied upon Microsoft itself either through their support forums, their usenet newsgroups, or via telephone support. I've found Microsoft is the worst when it comes to supporting it's userbase. They've never patched their operating systems like they should be doing, or supporting the legions of users who use their operating system, instead, they focus on trying to keep everyone who is competing against them from overtaking what ground they have gained, from their search engine trying to imitate Google, to just about everything aside from securing their operating system to patching up the plethora of problems that seem to crop up in everything Microsoft.

Thank you. Was hoping for a suggestion. WMP has that icky Microsoft feel that says "We didn't think about using it the way you want to (even though it may be obvious) so we aren't even going to cover it in the help files."

You understand, of course, that just because your configuration is not choking on the Microsoft SPs doesn't mean everybody else is stupid, or that there aren't any problems with it. I knew ya did. Merry Christmas.

Of course. I never said anyone was stupid, you did.
