White dies Sunday morning

Reggie White, a fearsome defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers who was one of the great players in NFL history, died Sunday. White turned 43 on Dec. 19.

Through the family pastor, Sara White confirmed her husband's death, saying that she believes White died of respiratory failure related to his sleep apnea. An autopsy is to be performed to determine the exact cause of death, which was not immediately known.

"Today our beloved husband, father and friend passed away," Sara White said through the pastor. "His family appreciates your thoughts and prayers as we mourn the loss of Reggie White. We want to thank you in advance for honoring our privacy."

White died at Presbyterian Hospital, where he was taken after his wife called 911. A police officer was outside White's Tudor-style home in a gated community, and would not let a reporter approach the house.

A two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and ordained minister who was known as the "Minister of Defense," White played a total of 15 years with Philadelphia (1985-92), Green Bay (1993-98) and Carolina (2000). He retired after the 2000 season as the NFL's all-time leader in sacks with 198. The mark has since been passed by Bruce Smith.

"Reggie White was a gentle warrior who will be remembered as one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history," NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said. "Equally as impressive as his achievements on the field was the positive impact he made off the field and the way he served as a positive influence on so many young people."

I have sleep apnea...and all they have done for me is put me on oxygen during the night...are there other things I could be doing?

I am a single mom with 2 small children, and don't want to leave them without a mother. Any advice is appreciated!!

Can they not operate to open your nasal passages more?
Also check Webmd.com, they have a good overview and suggestions on the latest treatments.

They've not suggested any other treatments...just said "use oxygen while you sleep"

I'm going to have to ask about this.

Reggie White was the reason I became a Green Bay fan........... I saw him leading a prayer on the field once and that was all it took for me.

Thanks for all the great memories Reggie -

There is a machine that increases the flow of air into your lungs while you sleep. It is called a C-PAP machine. You need to contact your HMO or other medical provider and request a sleep study for C-PAP approval.

It is my understanding that sleep apnea kicks in only if one sleeps on his/her back. If that is true then I have seen/heard of devices that won't allow one to sleep on one's back.

When humans breathe and between exhaling and inhaling there is a slight pause. During this pause the brain tells the chest cavity to enlarge so that one inhales. Sometimes, and for unknown reasons, the brain does not relay the proper information to the chest cavity and breathing stops so that it is actually a brain malfunction, not a breathing malfunction. This causes unconsciousness and in a couple of minutes, death.

A specialist in that area relayed the above information to me about 20 years ago.
