To go with common usage, what you describe aren't "tidal waves" but rather, tides. Until two days ago, I never understood why tsunamis were ever called tidal waves at all, but now I do.

I was showing her some of the videos..and our comments..she wants to know, while a tsunami is under the water..travelling fast ..till it nears shallows..what happens to a whale if it hits it?..fish food, right? Thats a good question. However, in the open ocean you have the full thickness of the ocean to transmit the wave, therefore it wouldn't be noticed to any great degree. It is only when it encounters shallow water does it rise up.

The worst place to be during a tsunami is near the shore, either on land or in shallow water. Out at sea all you would see is a swelling wave that passed beneath you.
