Can you help? Or, have you lost contact with someone in the region?

The BBC site has already begun receiving some hopeful and "found person" responses to a very long list of missing messages from worried friends and relatives from all over the world.

There are many Americans who have already posted the names and general descriptions of their missing loved ones on the BBC site.

There is an online bulletin board now from Phuket Thailand with a list of allegedly found survivors. Please remember that human nature being what it is, at the time of horrific disasters, charlatans, con artists, and carpet baggers often come calling.

Caution: there is no official way to confirm this list yet.

Does anyone know where there is a list of the Americans missing?

The above link to the Phuket Disaster Forum is probably getting bombarded because it is very slow loading. It was created by some Swedish programmers.

There are some posts only partially written in English and Swedish or German. Some Americans appear to have begun posting on the Phuket Disaster Forum.

The BBC Online site lists Americans who have written in looking for lost friends and relatives. The Phuket Disaster site linked above also lists some Americans.

Again, please be cautious about giving out too much of yours or your loved one's personal information if you decide to list the names.

Here's an example. These are two of the many names of the missing listed on the BBC Site:

"I'm looking for my work colleague, Francesco Hidayat, who is on vacation in Indonesia with his wife and children.
Mark W###, ####, ####, USA"

"We are looking for any information about our friends Robert Gwinn and Daisy Darling. They are both in their late-20s/early-30s. The last e-mail we received said they were vacationing in Bali.
Caleb #### and Cheryl ####, ####, USA"

Here's another bulletin board with pleas from worried friends and relatives about missing loved ones.

There was no detectable "Found" or "I'm Okay" list at the site.

Please take every precaution using any online list. There is no official way as of yet to verify any of the names of the missing or the found.

GOOD NEWS!

The International Red Cross has set up a web site for people to list the names and descriptions of their loved ones who may have been lost in the tsunami catastrophe.

The web site is probably being overwhelmed right now. I was unable to get any further than the first page.

"The aim of the ICRC's familylinks website is to help those separated by conflict or disaster to find information about their loved ones in order to restore contact.

The information available on the website may be listed in public places or broadcast on the radio to widen distribution to people without Internet access. All information on this website is provided by relatives of persons being sought or by those who register themselves."

My best friend is down in Phang Nga Province volunteering. She says it is incredibly bad. They are having major problems trying to ID bodieds. They are trying to match up things like piercings and jewelry since facial features are almost unrecognizable. A lot are missing skin because of being waterlogged and decomposing. Not pretty.

She is at one of the temples in the worst hit areas. They are sleeping inside the temple and the grounds surrounding it is covered in bodies since they are using it as a staging area. They are doing their best to ID the bodies they can and taking DNA samples of the ones they can't so they can bury them in mass graves.

Their resident DNA expert is a guy from bangkok who is a botanist. His specialty is doing DNA analysis of plants so he got a promotion. Everyone in the area is calling him, 'Doc'. They are trying to keep their spirits up. Since they are all sleeping in a communal area, they have to put up with each others quirks. When I talked to her last night, they were joking that people's snoring would keep the ghosts away... if only it would keep the smell away. She keeps telling me in a wispered voice (i.e Sixth Sense), "I smell dead people"

She said there is a German team there working with them and she had really good things to say about them.

Please ping anyone who may be in search of missing loved ones who were in the general area in or near Southern Thailand when the tsunami hit.

I have posted two survivor/patient lists provided by one Bangkok Hospital. These are lists of tsunami victims who have been admitted, are still being treated and/or discharged at this one hospital.

The patients are listed according to name, age, nationality and their admittance/discharge status.

Wow. It's so difficult to imagine the horrific conditions there. Still it's good to hear that she is keeping up her spirits.

Standing water there is frightening because of disease spreading insects such as flies and mosquitoes. Sure hope she has her immunizations and lots of bug repellent.

It also sounds as if she could use a large quantity of good incense to help in masking the smells and maybe some extra rubber gloves to avoid small cuts and abrasions, etc.

I doubt she has much in the way of bug spray. She went down with some friends who work for the Nation newspaper. Her backpack was mostly filled with things she bought at the local supermarket before she left, mainly bandages and things like tampons. I wish I could do more to help out but I am currently in the US and won't be back in Thailand until February.

I pulled the following off another site if anyone wants to send their donations directly to Thailand:

PATONG HOSPITAL TSUNAMI RELIEF FUND
Patong Hospital invites contributions of money or other donations to aid tsunami-affected victims. All donations will go directly towards the local people and foreigners who have lost their homes and belongings as well as help in acquiring the needed supplies to treat victims of the tsunami in Phuket, Thailand.

Thanks Killjoy.

Here is another list of missing persons in or near Thailand over 45 pages long now. The good news is that there are some "Found" comments added to this list.

At first glance it appears that they make you register to post a missing person report, but searching the list does not require registration:

I had heard that the people native to the locations are being buried in large pits, but that the bodies of the Europeans and other foreigners are being held so that they can be identified by their family members. The authorities were taking pictures of all the dead and recording any physical characteristics; clothing, tatoos, distinguishing marks, etc to help in the identification. The biggest problem, especially with the native peoples is that likely whole families were wiped out, and there is no one left to identify and claim the bodies.

Hopefully someone will find this German actor alive and recovering somewhere. Despite his youthful appearance he appears to have been a successful actor for quite some time. He sort of resembles a very young James Caan.

Just found this highlight of Marc Degener's movie career. It loaded quickly and played very well with no glitches.

Thanks Killjoy. It must be very frustrating for survivor's family and friends not knowing the status of their missing loved ones.

Karl, please ping any amateur radio Freepers. This sounds like a ham network. Right now they are speaking Thai, but the link came from a mixed English/Thai site.

That's great that they're taking DNA samples. I'm sure it will be some comfort for the families of those who have died to at least have their loved ones identified, and they may even be able to bury them.

It is good that they are getting as much information as possible.

If they can get enough DNA samples per person, mark it and store it properly, the DNA will keep indefinitely.

Hopefully there will be a way to identify most everyone, and with DNA samples and technology perhaps all in the near future.

I started looking at the "before tsunami" pictures of the missing last night. The site is so slow loading the pictures because all the graphics on it.

But I will keep weeding through them and will try to match up any of them with the on line morgue photos I have run across. The Thai (written) link (the last link I set you on the list) also has "fair skinned" deceased people in the bunch. You have to weed through each one).

Again if you or if anyone runs across a site of pictures of the missing, please ping me. I was hoping that someone would have set up a more organized picture site, like separate areas for each country. I can tell some of these morgue photos are of Swedes. Thanks!

Okay thanks Brigette. I'll post links as I find them. The photo sites are very slow loading because of the number of families searching online for their loved ones.

There is mention on some bulletin boards about some of the sites being so overloaded with hits that they are crashing.

Thanks for that video link. For some reason my audio wouldn't play but he looks like he's pretty talented. I sure hope all of the people still missing are just bunched up somewhere waiting to get word out that they are okay.

I can't begin to image what the family members of all of these missing people are going through.

All of those people just being pushed into mass graves, being burned in big piles or just washed out to sea......

Just awful.

Friends and Relatives Searches for Information About Missing Persons After Tsunami on Internet

The website http://www.p-h-u-k-e-t.com exceeds 650,000 visits in 48 hours

(PRWEB) December 31, 2004 -- Thailand/Sweden/Norway, December 30th, 2004: "The website www.p-h-u-k-e-t.com has received more than 650,000 visits over the past 48 hours from friends and relatives in search of missing persons after the tragedy that hit Asia on December 26.

A group of volunteers in Phuket, Thailand, came together and established the website shortly after the tragedy was a fact. The service became extremely popular within hours. With help from people in Sweden and Norway additional IT resources was made available and the website currently handles an average of 3-4000 simultaneous visitors constantly.

Several visitors have reported that they have found information about their missing persons or have been able to contact people that have confirmed the whereabouts of the persons they have been looking for.

With the help of national and international media we hope to be of service as long as needed. This initiative is strictly non-profit and is run on a voluntary basis without any form of advertising or other compensation."

Just had a short phone call with my friend working in the relief efforts. The strain/stress is really getting to everyone. There is no real effective leadership and a few people are trying to assert themselves as being in charge. Unfortunately, as it usually happens, these people are not qualified to lead things. A lot of local volunteers are starting to abandon efforts because of this. My friend is also getting quite angry at this foolishness. There is talk by a number of volunteers about abandoning the main staging areas and going off to work in some of the local villages. Not good.

Killjoy, thank you for the update on your friend.

"There is no real effective leadership and a few people are trying to assert themselves as being in charge. Unfortunately, as it usually happens, these people are not qualified to lead things. A lot of local volunteers are starting to abandon efforts because of this."

Just wait until the politicians arrive. It might get worse.

"...There is talk by a number of volunteers about abandoning the main staging areas and going off to work in some of the local villages. Not good."

It sure isn't good because all the volunteers should stick together for safety's sake. Separating off into smaller groups leaves them all vulnerable to people who may not need their help as much as they may need to make a political statement with hostages or worse.

Prayers up for your friend and all the volunteers who are trying to help. God protect them and keep them in comfort and good health.
