Can you help? Or, have you lost contact with someone in the region?

Use the form on the right to send your stories and please let us know if you do find anyone.

The BBC site has already begun receiving some hopeful and "found person" responses to a very long list of missing messages from worried friends and relatives from all over the world.

There are many Americans who have already posted the names and general descriptions of their missing loved ones on the BBC site.

There is an online bulletin board now from Phuket Thailand with a list of allegedly found survivors. Please remember that human nature being what it is, at the time of horrific disasters, charlatans, con artists, and carpet baggers often come calling.

Caution: there is no official way to confirm this list yet.

Does anyone know where there is a list of the Americans missing?

The above link to the Phuket Disaster Forum is probably getting bombarded because it is very slow loading. It was created by some Swedish programmers.

There are some posts only partially written in English and Swedish or German. Some Americans appear to have begun posting on the Phuket Disaster Forum.

The BBC Online site lists Americans who have written in looking for lost friends and relatives. The Phuket Disaster site linked above also lists some Americans.

Again, please be cautious about giving out too much of yours or your loved one's personal information if you decide to list the names.

Here's an example. These are two of the many names of the missing listed on the BBC Site:

"I'm looking for my work colleague, Francesco Hidayat, who is on vacation in Indonesia with his wife and children.
Mark W###, ####, ####, USA"

"We are looking for any information about our friends Robert Gwinn and Daisy Darling. They are both in their late-20s/early-30s. The last e-mail we received said they were vacationing in Bali.
Caleb #### and Cheryl ####, ####, USA"

Here's another bulletin board with pleas from worried friends and relatives about missing loved ones.

There was no detectable "Found" or "I'm Okay" list at the site.

Please take every precaution using any online list. There is no official way as of yet to verify any of the names of the missing or the found.

GOOD NEWS!

The International Red Cross has set up a web site for people to list the names and descriptions of their loved ones who may have been lost in the tsunami catastrophe.

The web site is probably being overwhelmed right now. I was unable to get any further than the first page.

"The aim of the ICRC's familylinks website is to help those separated by conflict or disaster to find information about their loved ones in order to restore contact.

The information available on the website may be listed in public places or broadcast on the radio to widen distribution to people without Internet access. All information on this website is provided by relatives of persons being sought or by those who register themselves."

My best friend is down in Phang Nga Province volunteering. She says it is incredibly bad. They are having major problems trying to ID bodieds. They are trying to match up things like piercings and jewelry since facial features are almost unrecognizable. A lot are missing skin because of being waterlogged and decomposing. Not pretty.

She is at one of the temples in the worst hit areas. They are sleeping inside the temple and the grounds surrounding it is covered in bodies since they are using it as a staging area. They are doing their best to ID the bodies they can and taking DNA samples of the ones they can't so they can bury them in mass graves.

Their resident DNA expert is a guy from bangkok who is a botanist. His specialty is doing DNA analysis of plants so he got a promotion. Everyone in the area is calling him, 'Doc'. They are trying to keep their spirits up. Since they are all sleeping in a communal area, they have to put up with each others quirks. When I talked to her last night, they were joking that people's snoring would keep the ghosts away... if only it would keep the smell away. She keeps telling me in a wispered voice (i.e Sixth Sense), "I smell dead people"

She said there is a German team there working with them and she had really good things to say about them.

Please ping anyone who may be in search of missing loved ones who were in the general area in or near Southern Thailand when the tsunami hit.

I have posted two survivor/patient lists provided by one Bangkok Hospital. These are lists of tsunami victims who have been admitted, are still being treated and/or discharged at this one hospital.

The patients are listed according to name, age, nationality and their admittance/discharge status.

Wow. It's so difficult to imagine the horrific conditions there. Still it's good to hear that she is keeping up her spirits.

Standing water there is frightening because of disease spreading insects such as flies and mosquitoes. Sure hope she has her immunizations and lots of bug repellent.

It also sounds as if she could use a large quantity of good incense to help in masking the smells and maybe some extra rubber gloves to avoid small cuts and abrasions, etc.

I doubt she has much in the way of bug spray. She went down with some friends who work for the Nation newspaper. Her backpack was mostly filled with things she bought at the local supermarket before she left, mainly bandages and things like tampons. I wish I could do more to help out but I am currently in the US and won't be back in Thailand until February.

I pulled the following off another site if anyone wants to send their donations directly to Thailand:

PATONG HOSPITAL TSUNAMI RELIEF FUND
Patong Hospital invites contributions of money or other donations to aid tsunami-affected victims. All donations will go directly towards the local people and foreigners who have lost their homes and belongings as well as help in acquiring the needed supplies to treat victims of the tsunami in Phuket, Thailand.
