Kofi Annan Skis While Asia Suffers (3 days on slopes during tragedy!)-(Vanity)

Posted on 12/30/2004 12:13:21 PM PST by Bon mots

Just saw the interview with Kofi Annan on CNN. For three days he was nowhere to be found. It turns out that for the last three days he was very busy on his ski vacation.

This after the New York Times was attacking President Bush for not springing quickly enough into action. This is actually the UN's job. Bush took over - AGAIN - because the UN under Annan - AGAIN - simply is not up to the task.

I hate to post vanities, but I felt that this was important. We can't let Annan keep getting passes from the fawning, sycophant MSM. He screwed up BIG TIME again. Don't let this go unnoticed. Let's make some noise about how Annan fiddled (skiied) while Asia drowned.

His excuse was that he could work from anywhere in the world. Right. He's always making excuses. What did he actually do over those three days then?

Now the great Annan has planned a meeting... next week. Wow.

Bush has already done plenty. Sent money. Moblized troops. People are moving.

Kofi Annan has called a meeting for next week.

Ski vacation, huh? According to Cliff May, the UN pays to monitor the snowpack for alpine ski resorts. Meanwhile the residents along the Indian Ocean are without a tsunami warning system.

Did he actually go on CNN after tht pitiful press conference?

Tell me, did he still look so "long in the face" since Bush has completley boxed him out of the "coalition?"

DUers are still bashing Bush because he is still in Crawford. What is being in the White House going to do for the victims??? Is he going to magically make everything better again by sitting in his chair in the oval office? Sometimes I wonder what planet they are on.

Can anyone name a single success of Kofi Annan's?

Let's see... Rwanda... oh, never mind... wait...
Srebrenica... uh....
okay, Iraq... no
North Korea...
the current half dozen or so wars in his home region in Africa...well, uh...
Oil for food...uh...

...and that buffoon had the nerve to criticize Bush and the US.

I loath the UN.
What do we need to do to get out of it?

Kofi Annan is Bin Laden's piss boy.

Americans need to storm the UN, drag him out of the building and burn his body in the street. Then we need to take his corpse and hang it from the Brooklin bridge.
Seriously. I would cry tears of joy.

The source is CNN, FNC, C-Span and MSNBC. They all carried the press conference live (C-Span is the only one that continued with the full press conference).

Koffi Annan was asked how it looked for him to be on vacation in Jackson Hole at this time. He responded that he can work from anywhere.

The only problem is, to date I can't find a single story of anything the UN has done to alleviate the suffering.

What a contrast to the United States which within 24 hours had mobilized ships to the region and forensic scientists.

There are many more UN successes than I can mention here, especially as most of them are on the quiet side. In the nature of the case, a body like the UN will get blamed for the visible misfortunes it 'fails' to prevent, but rarely get credited for the fruits of its ongoing efforts. Here are a few good results that come to mind, though:

Raising awareness of human rights and making the World Declaration of 1948 one of the leading documents of our time;

Contributions to establishing the Law of the Sea and other aspects of the Law of Peoples;

The successful contributions of several agencies including The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR);

Preventing civil wars during decolonization, for instance in the Congo, 1960-61;

Ending the Iran-Iraq war in 1988;

Helping to end apartheid in South Africa;

Keeping the peace on Cyprus; in Lebanon; Liberia; Angola; Ethiopia/Erithrea; the Central African Republic; Bosnia and Kosovo after the wars; in and many other locations;

Wiping out smallpox;

Monitoring and promoting free elections in countries like El Salvador, East Timor, Eritrea, Guatemala, and many other;

Preventing massive famine on the Horn of Africa in 2001;

Getting Iran to agree to spot checks of nuclear facilities. Like I said, those are just a few that come to mind.

Source for what? Do you belive bon mots would make this up?

I tried to put the CNN.COM link in there, since it was just broadcast on CNN, but then the form required me to do an auto-excerpt which usually makes a mess of things. So I posted it without a source. This story is still getting out.

Kofi Annan was in Jackson Hole. It took him over 72 hours to get around to making his first statement. He didn't deny it, but went on the attack saying that he can work from anywhere in the world.

Too bad somebody didn't snap some pictures of him sipping a gin and tonic in the sun slopeside while kicking the snow off of his ski boots. He didn't do a damned thing for three days.

The second important fact in all of this is that this particular type of incident is smack on Kofi Annan's job description under 'roles and responsibilities', and NOT on President Bush's!

This just broke on the press conference. He was on his vacation in Jackson Hole. There is nothing on line yet.

Black men ski?

I'll ignore the racially sensitive aspects of this question and answer...

Skiing is a very expensive sport. To take a family of four on a ski trip you should be prepared to spend $4000.00 to $5000.00 for a week, plus another $4000.00 on equipment. Black people generally occupy a lower earning segment of our society so you will be likely to see less of them engaging in expensive sports which require expensive equipment.

That said...

Kofi Annan makes over $300,000.00 per year, plus all the money he has managed to steal via Oil-for-Food, so he can certainly afford to see and be seen in the trendiest of star-studded venues. He might not actually even ski... but he's sporting the goods, that's for sure!

You're exactly right- skiing is extremely expensive, and Jackson Hole is no bargain either. In addition, I bet there will be photos of him skiing..... they will surface.

It really wasn't meant to be racially insensitive. On the whole, though, black people do not participate in winter sports much. Maybe that's because they are smart enough to stay where it's warm!!!!

What a contrast to the United States which within 24 hours had mobilized ships to the region and forensic scientists.

My second point exactly.
Kofi said he 'worked' over those missing 72 hours.
Just what 'work' did he do? What did he mobilize? What did he send? How many people did he put on the ground? What planes were loaded?

From what was said during that press conference, he planned a meeting NEXT FRIGGIN' WEEK!

My first point... was that it appears that "Nero fiddled while Asia burned"...
Or, more accurately, Kofi Skiied and Caroused While Asia Drowned and Rotted

No pun intended, but the word "nero" in Italian means "black".

Everyone else seems to understand my question and its reasonings. Why do you feel the need to take such issue with such a simple, reasonable, harmless request?
