A new Trojan horse - named Phel - that punishes users of Microsoft Windows XP operating system is in the wild.
Security software firm Symantec has issued a bulletin warning Windows XP users to be on the look out for the program, which is distributed as an .html file. The malicious code can attack systems running XP Service Pack 2. The vuln was first found in October, and Microsoft is busy trying to catch up to it.
"Microsoft is taking this vulnerability very seriously, and an update to correct the vulnerability is currently in development," the company told ComputerWorld. "We will release the security update when the development and testing process is complete, and the update is found to effectively correct the vulnerability."
Symantec warns that users will see two Internet Explorer windows pop up when an .html file with Trojan.Phel.A is opened. If the code does its worst, the Trojan will automatically be executed every time a Windows user turns on his machine.
More information from Symantec is available here. ®
I'm confused. Just what IS a kind of html file that will have this trojan?
What do we watch for?

Be cautious.
And your sense of humor is critically impaired.
Lighten up.
Looks like ALL of my computers were swithched to firefox just in time. Of course, at the rate things attack IE, any time is just in time.
I haven't had an Adaware or PestPatrol alert, sinec I switched to Firefox. I was getting loads with IE 6.
That says enough for me.
" I don't know about your sexual orientation, but your stupidity is obvious."
Touchy, aren't we. Calling someone stupid because of that remark is over the top. I'd hate to know what you'd call me if you read some of my previous posts.
Give the guy a break.

lol, thanks - a - lot.... coffee sprayed all over the keyboard.
Nope-cheaper! Check out all the FREE programs included with the Macs and they're a way better deal for the price.
ping list needed.
The BIOS????
Yikes!
Anymore details on that virus?
Well, it is an issue of stupidity. I'm too stupid to figure out how to fully function in a PC world with a Mac. I know you all say it can be done, but the last time I messed with one (5 years ago) it could be done then, too, but it was a pain in the rear. I'm also too dumb to figure out how to have an extra $1,500 on hand to spend on a computer. So I am fully willing to admit that perhaps if I was a computer dork like yourself that a Mac might be better, the thing, I have better things to do with my time and money. And don't ya'll give me the load about how Mac's are so reliable, etc. My wife's Macs were no more reliable than any PC I ever had. And yeah, there are no viruses for Mac's, but then again I have never gotten a virus on my PC either.
No worries here! I use Firefox ;-)
Man I haven't heard of that virus for several years now, it used to be prevalent, but has no usefull life span (since it kills most of its victoms), an so has fallen into obscurity. Did you ever learn the name of this virus?
There are a ton of browsers out there. ALL are better than IE and most of them leave IE in the dust.
Proud Opera/Firefox user :)
How does one go about obtaining viruses?
I'd hope Freepers would be smart enough to not open emails a la "Win a million dollars! Just click on this attachment to see how!"
