LOL...based on the kinds of things they said in the interview, you know they want your daughter (and my sons) to subsidize their retirement! I would think that without kids, and the expenses they bring such as college, they have more money that the rest of us, and don't need any subsidy. And don't forget that the childless are forced to pay public school taxes for those that do have children. That is indeed a subsidy.

"Whether or not I want to have kids is not the only consideration," said Wenker. "I believe there's a problem with population, serious issues with the environment, and I believe I have to be part of the solution." What an idiot! Follow that logic to its end and I guess the human race must extinguish itself in order for the earth to survive.

LOL! Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that unmarried people should be expected to have families....You have a very good reason to choose to be single. My comments were specifically aimed at married people who choose to not have children, and most likely for selfish reasons. Obviously, medical conditions are another exception.
However, I stand by my comments about grandchildren. Nothing can compare to that.

I respect anyone's decision to remain childless, but don't be envious of those who do and have baby showers. OK, I can go along with that. But child-free folk find themselves leaned on a lot with the idea that they have free time that those who CHOSE to have kids don't.

I had to laugh when the woman said that childless women are not celebrated like moms-to-be. Who in their right mind would be jealous of not having a baby shower?

I agree. DINKS dual income no kids, no future, need to import poverty to have these people support something.

I guess the human race must extinguish itself in order for the earth to survive. These population-crisis types always think there's just enough room for them and their friends. "Just enough of me; way too much of you!" as P.J. O'Rourke put it.

There is such hostility on this thread to those who have chosen to not have children. I don't know where such hostility comes from but I can say this...It's nobodies business but their own.

Being childless and having abortions are from the same root: selfishness. Period, end of story. If you could have, but do not have, kids, why waste the oxygen? I know this is harsh, but...

I don't know where such hostility comes from but I can say this...It's nobodies business but their own. What a refreshingly CONSERVATIVE opinion!

My personal recommendation is if you want kids, do it young. My wife passed when I was 45, she had a son by a previous marriage, but we never had any together, and I'm not close with her son at all.
Now, at 50, I very much regret not having any.
And still deeply miss her.

I'd guess the demographic of this group is largely democrat voting. I've never seen a demographic. But, every childless by choice person that I know in my age group (Boomers) is a conservative Republican. That includes me.

My wife and I have been married for 6 years now and do not have children because we are trying to finish college.
Meanwhile our siblings have children but are uneducated and struggle to provide for them. We are both 28 and feel that we still have time however we do find ourselves isolated at times by our parents who think we are weird for being married so long without children.
I can relate to this article. We often ponder about having children but have zero desire to do so right now.
If we do have children we want to be able to provide the best for them that we can therefore finishing college is a must!

You have a very good reason to choose to be single. My comments were specifically aimed at married people who choose to not have children, and most likely for selfish reasons "Most likely." How is having children a selfless act? Most people who have children are expressing the ultimate in selfish megalomania -- they want to make another copy of themselves.
Now, this is OK -- it is nature's way if using our self-love to propogate the sepcies. But don't elevate people who have kids to some sort of selfless status. It just ain't so.

It seems to me the dichotomy in society is growing. I don't have kids so I am not sure how this works but most of my friends who do, have their whole lives wrapped up in their kids. I can't tell you how many Christmas cards I have with their kids on them. You know I really don't care.
Then there is the other extreme in our culture. Work, career, 24-7. I don't mind talking business occasionally after hours but I mean geez, I really don't care who's at what firm and who got to try what case.
On the other hand, my one friend has his whole life wrapped up in his boat. There's a guy with priorities.
