RATHER STAYS HOME; EXECUTIVES SPLIT; MOONVES LOOKS TOWARDS FUTURE

*Exclusive**

CBSNEWS veteran Don Hewitt called Dan Rather's disappearance from Monday's Evening News "really stupid" during a damage control meeting on Monday, sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

One top source inside the CBS Broadcast Center claimed Rather was told to stay off the air on Monday, as a form of punishment!

Chief Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer was called in to anchor the damaged ship.

CBS staffers were shocked Monday when CBS president Les Moonves suddenly tied Rather's upcoming resignation to the phony document flap, a departure from CBS's official storyline.

Moonves explained in a memo: "Dan Rather has already apologized for the segment and taken responsibility for his part in the broadcast. He voluntarily moved to set a date to step down from the CBS EVENING NEWS in March of 2005... after examining the report and thinking about its implications, we believe any further action would not be appropriate."

I am a loving, kind, sensitive, and forgiving man. And thinking about all the things Dan Rather has accomplished in his career, I feel...no sympathy.

Maybe they should show him sitting in the corner facing the wall somewhere in the background as a part of the live broadcast.

I DO want an apology..for the President. The one thing CBS will never do.

Infighting. I wasn't aware of this particular nuance.

Meanwhile, Mapes is officially defending the documents as authentic.

Well, I do want to know whether he was hiding (which I suspect) or given a mandatory day off as Drudge suggests.

The former reflects very badly on the man of "Courage" and the latter looks like damage control from CBS.

Considering how firmly he publicly backed the story, it must be real embarrassing for Dan Rather to hear how damning the cover-up report was about him and his fellow sloppy journalists.

Hanity today was right on in that the report totally ignored the political bias aspect and focused on sloppy journalism. Which if you investigate the tagline I am using will show how ironic this whole TANG forged document flap is. Dan Rather has lectured journalists on correct procedure regarding stories (see tag line) and yet when cornered he said that CBS had done everything right and stood by the Story. He knew better and lied to the public destroying his credibility to try to take down George W Bush.

Let me make the tagline link a little easier

I like how the report credited the perfect journalistic storm as including the fact that their seasoned anchor backed the story and that is why CBS goofed.

Yes, Dan you belong in the woodshed.

Congratulations to Mat Drudge, less bias, more accuracy and many days faster with the news that people need.

Exactly, I actually think a lot of her palaver is crocodile tears Ms. Mapes is going to be sitting pretty financially after all this. Her pension from cBiaSed is going to look rather paltry compared the mother lode she is going to cash in on now. Another chance to spew her acidic vitriol against GW. She will be moonbats' martyr to the evil Republicans.

This asute find last nite from Howlin ....

Fruedian slip - but they in effect admit they were after the Bushies.

The intention was to assure the W.H. it was never personal, it was never political driven.

If they cannot admit the truth I can't see an apology forthcoming any time soon.

O'Reilly is a jackass. This was a planned attack and Danny Boy was rubbing his hands with glee. Visions of the crusading reporter bringing down a sitting government were dancing in his brain. For him, it would have been a coup and he would have been crowned King of all Journalists in perpetuity.

C'mon! Dan's not home pouting or being punished! Dan is home forging some other documents to redeem humself in the eyes of the neocommunist left from whom he takes orders.

They got away with the Lehman forgeries in Kerry's military papers, why wouldn't they have gotten away with some additional forgeries about Bush.

What we should be dong s searching back over the tenure of the zealous liberal left-wingers and see what other stories they did are based on forgeries. How many times has 60 Minutes waved a document in the face of some corporate officer and hit him over the head with it? They were forgeries!!!

Proof that Dan was intentionally try to fake evidence to sink Bush is, of course, in the fact that he never once mentioned what Kerry might have been hiding by his refusal to sign an SF-180. This would have been much more interesting to an honest "journalist."

I heard O'Reilly, and almost got violently ill at his attempt to paint Rather as a victim.

The odious Rather has always been anti-Republican, way back from the Nixon days: Nixon: "Are you running for something?" Rather: "No sir, are you?"

Then his confrontation with Bush 41 when Dad asked Rather if he wanted his entire career to be judged on the time he threw a tantrum and walked off the set.

Rather HATES the Bush family - I think it's partly his innate knee-jerk liberalism, and there may be a "Texas" element added in there, too.

I hate it when Alan gets that self righteous tone. How DARE someone accuse Dan of corrupting the evening news even when it is true.

Oh, great. Bernstein is on "corrupting" H&C. BTW, Rathergate is about the collusion of CBS & the DNC to take down a sitting president. I would put this on par with a "criminal" president carl.
