Indonesia denies U.S. pilots use of airspace; carrier leaves
Washington Times ^ | 1/13/05 | Denis D. Gray, AP

ABOARD THE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN — The aircraft carrier leading the U.S. military's tsunami relief effort steamed out of Indonesian waters yesterday after the country declined to let the ship's fighter pilots use its airspace for training missions — part of a broad effort by Indonesia to reassert control over its territory.
The USS Abraham Lincoln's diversion, which was not expected to affect aid flights, came as the White House asked the Indonesian government to explain why it appears to be demanding that the U.S. military and other foreign troops providing disaster relief leave the country by the end of March.

[snip]

The Indonesian government said foreign troops would be out of the country by March 31. "A three-month period is enough, even sooner the better," Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla said Tuesday.
U.S. Marines have scaled back plans to send hundreds of troops ashore to build roads and clear rubble. The two sides reached a compromise in which the Americans agreed not to set up a base camp on Indonesia or carry weapons.
Instead, the Marines — about 2,000 of whom were diverted to tsunami relief from duty in Iraq — will keep a "minimal footprint" in the country, with most returning to ships at night, said Col. Tom Greenwood, commander of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

[snip]

Under Navy rules, pilots of carrier-based warplanes cannot go longer than 14 days without flying, or their skills are considered to have degraded too far and they have to undergo extensive retraining.

YoungBlackRepublican,

I was mocking other posts in other threads. One poster asked how we would feel with the french in Florida.

I guess you hadn't read any of the posts I am mocking?

I guess I should have added more clues for the truely clueless.

I am sorry you were confused and mistaken about me.

This problem demonstrates why there can NEVER be peace in the world. You can't get governments and extremists to set aside their hatreds long enough to receive FREE help during natural disasters.

Starving, poor people are ONCE AGAIN used as punching bags by their own leaders.

Let disease and starvation ravage those countries too hateful to accept assistance.

I think it's a more than reasonable request. We're treading on foreign territory. We should respect their request.

Please remember that we are helping because it's the right thing to do! We shouldn't expect any sort of thanks or any sort of exclusionary treatment by foreign governments.

Love that line from Airplane; "Chump don't want no help, chump don't get no help".

No one really gets it. The bottom line is that we are Infidels. It is the duty of all 'peace loving' Muslims to convert or kill the Infidels amongst them. Just the footsteps of our Infidel shoes and boots on Islamic soil is more offensive than the death of hundreds of thousands of innocents who have died and millions who remain hopeless and homeless. We cannot cower though. Their response shows weakness not strength. We cannot be overcome by their weakness. Instead of downplaying our role in the disaster relief we should emblazon the US banner everywhere in Indonesia, so the people from their own eyes know from whence their salvation comes.
Of course, if we do this the government will ask us to leave and we can leave knowing we tried to do right.
Bin Laden has said his goal is to bankrupt us, so why spend our treasure without at least letting the people know that we are not the enemy!
Truly, we are the only nation on earth with the capacity to really do the job, so let our actions during this tragedy be a message to the UN, Alarmist's and enemies alike that our power is only used for the good of all mankind.

time to face it.
when it comes to the true nature of islam.
Bush is not the brightest bulb.

They want to rot?
We should ship them the gangreen bacterium they are requesting.

Islam is what MUST be wiped out. Not ignorance, not prejudice, not abuse of women and children... those are just the symptoms. ISLAM is the root of hell on earth.

Just look what it does to it's human adherents.

we should expect thanks.
we should be treated in an exclusive fashion.
we are laying our lives and treasure down for them.
they should be rejoicing at our generousity.
if not, they should rot.

and apparently they will, by choice.
we owe them NOTHING.
we offer them everything.
let their will, be done.

-Agreed.

Our military isn't designed to be meals on wheels. I suppose it would be OK, if Indonesia wanted us there, to help them briefly...but they don't want our military there!

U.S. should help, using private funds donated through private charities. That way it's true charity, not compulsory.

Other nations are starving besides Indonesia and Indonesia had poverty before the tsunami.

I say give relief to other nations that are poor and or which have been hit by disaster. No sense in getting spit in our face and put at jeopardy to offer assistance.

The Good Samaritan set aside differences to offer aid. That is fine. What if there were 2 people in need of differnt nationalities? In my scenario, the circumstance is such that you can only offer assistance to one at a time; the one you choose accepts your aid but then kicks you in the back. Do you continue to try to offer aid from a distance or do you shift focus to the other in need (not seeking "favor" but at least not seeking rejection and hatred)?

I'm guessing you're one of those people that go around saying... "Hey everyone look at me! I did something nice for that person in need! Everyone should come and shake my hand, pat me on the back and sing my praises!"

To each his own, I guess.

It's not 'Good Will' if you expect compensation, be it moral or tangible.

Thanks Veto!

Pretty much so.

"Halal" meat other than pork (which is forbidden) involves a Arabic prayer and then slicing the animals jugular vein and letting them bleed to death. So if the chicken, cow or whatever was no slaughtered in that fashion then it is not halal.

This is Islam today in Southeast Asia. I believe that Americans are far more hated than Israelis as they are more well known. Here In Thailand, the news that has been blown off the front page is that throughout the terrible loss of life in the past weeks, the Islamists have been keeping up their killing of 2 to 3 people a day. They bombed a noodle shop the day befor yesterday, killing one and injuring 6. Yesterday 2 people were shot - executed. The killers blend back into the Muslim community and are seldom caught. Why? Because nearly all the Muslims agree with Jihad.

"During Friday's prayers in a Baghdad mosque, Sheik Ahmed Abdul-Ghafour Al-Samarie of the Association of Muslim Scholars — an influential Sunni group — demanded that the U.S. troops pull out of Iraq.

"We have to realize that God is mightier than America and more powerful than the occupation forces," he said.

"America, which conducted crimes everywhere and supported Israel against Muslims, should take the lesson of the torrent and surge of the ocean in Asia," Al-Samarie said, adding that the United States could be destroyed in a similar manner."
What the "Muslim Scholar" fails to point out is that in this event the vast majority of sufferers are Indonesian Muslims. If God is sending a message then the message is being sent to radical Islamists. Just as with the other great natural disaster in Iran.
The discussion should be what is it that Muslim extremists are doing for the good of their people?
Is it assistance enough for their fellow Muslims to continue to kill Infidels? Can the Muslim victims of this disaster feast on that harvest or sleep securely under that mantel?
Now as America and other western nations once again rush to give aid to over a million stricken Muslims, what thanks is there and what are the radical Islamists doing to help their own people?
