A family of Christians who fled persecution in Egypt ran into a bloody nightmare in Jersey City - where the husband, wife and their two daughters were found knifed to death in their home yesterday.

The bodies of Hossam Armanious, 46, his wife, Amal Garas, and their two youg daughters - Sylvia, 15, and Monica, 8 - were found gagged with their throats slit at 4 a.m. yesterday inside the green, two-story, wood-frame home they moved into five years ago.

Investigators were struggling to figure out who could have slaughtered the religiously devout family.

Jersey City Police Chief Robert Troy Said police are leaning toward the suspects being at least an aquaintance, after finding no sign of break-in.

"I don't believe it was random," he said. "They probably knew their killers."

Rafique Iscandar, 51, who described himself as Armanious' best friend, said his pal also came (to America) because of the pressure of being Christian in the Muslim Egypt.

"They were afraid there," Iscandar said. "They are under siege by the government. We lived in fear."

Most Egyptians were Christian until the conquest by theArabs around the 7th century and many remained so but persecution and jaziya etc wore the numbers down to present day 2%

I would be interested in when the family converted over to Christianity because if it had been recently, I would suspect other family members.

Copts were Christian way before our northern European ancestors became Christian.

The parents still have Arabic sounding names. So the parents were probably Muslim at one time. I would still look at family members who were Muslim for a possoble "honor killing".

Arab does not necessarily mean Mooselimb. The Lebanese etc are Christian Arabs and were Christians in the first centuries after Christ. Syria itself is 10% Christian, Egypt, 2%, Lebanon 44%, Iraq 2%, etc.

I live in Hudson County and there have been incidents of Coptics being sent threatending letters. The letters usually say something like "converto to Islam or die". It may be that his family was put to the test and chose option 2.

Either way I will pray for their souls.
