"Most on this forum don't seem to get it. Bush is playing good cop, bad cop. He knows that Congress will never renew the AWB but he can remove the issue from the Democrats, gun grabbers, and the media..."
I think most of us do get it. We just want Bush and the pubs to always be on offense.. pushing, incrementally...moving our agenda forward.
Just as the libs constantly do with their agenda.
Long term...I prefer to remove an issue from debate entirely, just as was done by the pubs with welfare reform...remember that item?

We succeeded in effectively repealing the AWB, which in itself is astonishing. Only because it had an expiration date, and thus Congress had to act to renew it. If they had to act to repeal it, repeal would have been very difficult. The real victory was in getting the expiration provision into the law in the first place, back in 1994.

nobody's even talking about gun control legislationHR 246 That's just the one whose sponsor is stupid enough to use the term "assault weapon".
Some states are trying to ban "sniper rifles". Others are straining to pass their own version of an assault weapons ban.

How does telling the government that we (likely) are carrying a concealed weapon work in our favor? Vermont carry would be a move toward freedom, not de facto registration via CCW. I do have these very reservations about CCW.
However, you have to remember where we were coming from: CCW was very controversial to begin, with bogeyman such as "Florida will become the Wild West with bullets a-flyin'" thrown out by HCI and their fellow travellers when it became apparent that Mrs. Marion Hammer's hard work would be enough to win passage of CCW in Florida.
What we are trying to do is move the goalposts. Now that we have CCW as widespread as it is, the next move is to go to Alaska (and remember, Alaska was a very recent vote) and Vermont-style laws. We fight for immunity from frivolous lawsuits for gunmakers. We work on repealing the NFA, the GCA, and the FFA, and a lot of gun control just falls apart. Then we can also try to push a federal pre-emption of all state and local laws that contravene the 2nd Amendment.
We take our winnings and we strive to compound them.

Exactly so.

what do you mean? In an earlier post, you said maybe he was behaving like he was in an interview, saying what they wanted to hear. Then I said maybe that wasn't a good idea under oath. Then you said no, what he said was fine. So I said gotcha, meaning "ok". But if you re-read the posts, maybe you'll get a better understanding.

It's official, Gonzales is off the Supreme Court wannabe list. Actually his desire to be on that list might explain his statement. Wouldn't want the Dems and other gun grabbers filibustering his nomination.

I heard Mort Kondracke on Fox even admit to the "symbolic" meaning of the AWB, and the effort of going after the cosmetics of these weapons as only a stepping stone for further restrictions. Kondracke is the epitome of a neocon.

My thoughts exactly. Do we really want an AG that would LIE under oath? Either Gonzo is a Gun Grabber, or he's a Liar cut from the same cloth Clinton was. It is immaterial that he may only be lying about his 2A stance to gain the office.
Perjury under oath is perjury. Regardless of if his doing so helps "my side" of the Second Amendment fight. I don't want a fundamentally dishonest person fighting to protect my Second Amendment Rights.

More Cultural Pollution. Go home, Gonzales.

Honestly, I couldn't figure out what you were saying.
To: E. Pluribus Unum
That's just the point. Gonzales has no principles. Never did. He's not the right man for the job. We need an American.

Do you understand the meaning of the word E-F-F-E-C-T-I-V-E-L-Y ????You're a nice one, aren't you? It was not effectively repealed either.

His own personal opinion, as Attorney General, is of no consequence. I can't think of an upside to this unconstitutional posturing.

AP is only trying to cause discord in the Conservative ranks, and it looks like they may have had some success.
Yes and I don't think we should be seeing that discord here. I don't know what anyone else thinks.
