NEW YORK -- Police arrested state Sen. Kevin Parker on Thursday after he allegedly punched a traffic agent who was writing him a ticket.

The Brooklyn Democrat was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, police said. He was being held at the 67th Precinct stationhouse.

Witnesses told police the dispute began at about 3 p.m. after the agent found Parker's car double-parked on a Brooklyn street. When the agent started to write a ticket, the senator allegedly grabbed it, crumpled it up and threw it in his face.

During an ensuing struggle, Parker allegedly punched the agent. Police officers responding to a 911 call arrested the senator.

A message left at Parker's office was not immediately returned. No one answered the telephone at the local Democratic Party office.

What an arrogant idiot. Toss him in jail and through away the key. The Dems are really getting out of hand with their attitudes of being better than the rest of us.

I agree... all he had to say to the Judge is that he quickly parked as part of his Senate duties, case dismissed.

Sadly, this is NY and I doubt it will hurt his career one bit. Most of those representing NY have poor judgment and are very ineffectual.

Well, well, well. I guess Mr. Parker has discovered that he is not yet high enough to be exempt from the laws of "the little people."

Sounds to me like double parking, assault and littering. And disturbing the peace. Plus, resisting arrest.

The Brooklyn Democrat was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor"

If it were me or you, would it be a misdemeanor?

S 120.08 Assault on a peace officer, police officer, fireman or
emergency medical services professional.
A person is guilty of assault on a peace officer, police officer,
fireman or emergency medical services professional when, with intent to
prevent a peace officer, police officer, a fireman, including a fireman
acting as a paramedic or emergency medical technician administering
first aid in the course of performance of duty as such fireman, or an
emergency medical service paramedic or emergency medical service
technician, from performing a lawful duty, he causes serious physical
injury to such peace officer, police officer, fireman, paramedic or
technician.
Assault on a peace officer, police officer, fireman or emergency
medical services professional is a class C felony.

He'll probably skate--no doubt there's a part of the state constitution which exempts legislators from arrest, etc., while the legislature is in session.

We have a state senator who used to (in his younger years) drive way over the 55 mph speed limit to and from the capitol and would laugh it off when pulled over by the state patrol. Wasn't anything they could do.

Even if exempted, there's no reason or excuse he couldn't have been civil, respectful and polite to the NY officer.
