State Dept. Issues Travel Warning for Mexico
AP ^ | 26 Jan 05 | Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department on Wednesday issued a travel warning for Americans visiting Mexico, saying violent criminal activity, including murder and kidnaping, has increased in its northern border region.

"U.S. citizens should be aware of the risk posed by the deteriorating security situation," the department said in a public announcement. It added that the great majority of victims are Mexican citizens.

The announcement attributed the increased crime to a war between criminal organizations struggling for control of the lucrative narcotics trade. It said the leaders of several major criminal organizations have been arrested, creating a power vacuum.

"This has resulted in a wave of violence aimed primarily at members of those trafficking organizations and criminal justice officials," the announcement said.

I have never understood why Americans want to visit Mexico.

You don't have to be 21 to get drunk. Historically, the border towns were known for their bordellos. No hassle controlled substances at the local pharmacies.

Any other questions?

And, they left out, don't drink the water.

Unless there are some compelling business reasons, I'm not sure why Americans visit Mexico

Cause it's CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP AND there are plenty of penny pinching retirees who go there for the winter instead of pricey congested Florida or smoggy rpicey Arizona or Southern California. Personally Mexico doesn't do a thing for me. Argentina has as many kidnappings

Well... I worked in Cancun in 98/99. The city is still very safe - for Mexican standards.

My neighbors who are snow birds were just telling me about some small town in Mexico just across the AZ border that everyone goes to for cheap dental work. They said the work is excellent, but I don't think it would be worth it.

Agreed. If it was so hot, they wouldn't be coming over here... Although in their own country they would be expected to PAY something!

But give them free passage over here. That makes a hell of a lot of sense. Is it any wonder that so many American towns are having Hispanic gang problems?

This advisory is too funny for words.

For years we've been trying to tell Washington that it's becoming dangerous 'ON OUR SIDE' of the border.

They're just coming to grips with how bad it is in Mexico.

It is cheap. It is exotic (different from the US). It is warm in winter. It has some nice beaches.

although the reasons aren't identical, there is one common theme -- envy. ....Seething envy.

I don't think this is so for muslims. They hate our culture which is very materialistic, secular. They also hate the freedoms our women have. They hate hollywood movies. They hate democracy where the little people actually have a voice. They hate Wal Mart. They hate McDonald's.

Mexico loves the US, they do have envy, but want to have what the US has.

As part of the US, Mexico would immediately be seen as a desirable place to live again by its expatriots living in the northern 48 illegally

You have that exactly right. The difference in real estate values between land on our side of the rio grande and their side, shows that it is not the land that counts, it is the people who govern it. And this is true around the world, SK and NK is also a good example.

All politics are local. We should relocate congress (both houses) to San Diego or some other border town for one session. Followed by a session in San Francisco to become personally aquainted with the 'gay' agenda. Followed by a session in the Northwest to enrich themselves in the Green revolution and anarchy. Finally, a session in Montana or Wyoming where the nearest Starbucks is over a hundred miles away.

Yeah, our 'reprersentatives' are out of touch. Ted Kazinski had a better grasp on reality-- sitting in his one-room mountain cabin inventing ways people would fear What Brown Could Do for them.
