Fireball seen over Madrid

Fri Jan 28,10:47 AM ET

MADRID (AFP) - Residents of the area near Madrid airport reported seeing a ball of fire explode and disintregrate in skies over the Spanish capital overnight, security services said.

Emergency services received telephone calls about 10:30 pm (2130 GMT) Thursday reporting the object, described by some callers as looking like a meteorite, which was seen exploding and disintegrating.

Subway employee Jose Antonio Lopez told EFE news agency that when he went home from work, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the capital, he saw a "huge, very red incandescent ball giving off a huge flash then disappeared after a few seconds."

"It was a mass of red fire falling vertically," he said, suggesting it could have been a meteorite.

Terminological Quibble:  A meteorite is what a meteor becomes after it strikes the Earth.

But file this quibble under the heading 'Lost Causes'.

Didn't something like this happen right before the earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia ?

This happens daily. Most of the time over the ocean or some unihabited area.

Meteorite Hits Cambodia, Sparks Fires and Prayers

Wed Jan 26,12:38 AM ET

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A 10 pound meteorite which landed in a former Khmer Rouge (news - web sites) zone of northwest Cambodia started fires across rice fields and prayers from villagers who saw it as a divine omen of peace.

"Some farmers are angry with the rock because it caused fires and destroyed several hundred hectares of their paddy fields," said Sok Sareth, police chief of Banteay Meanchey province, around 200 miles northwest of the capital, Phnom Penh.

"But others asked the police to leave it where it landed and put it on shrine to pray for peace," he told Reuters on Wednesday.

The black lump of celestial rock sent villagers scurrying for cover when it thumped into the ground in the war-scarred southeast Asian nation on Monday morning.

"It made a noise like a bomb exploding," Sok Sareth said. "It's a good thing it didn't land in the village or people could have been killed."

Pictures of the meteorite were splashed across newspapers in the capital, but the item itself has been carried away by police pending scientific analysis.

Initial investigations by explosives experts still clearing the bombs and mines left behind from Cambodia's years of civil war against Pol Pot's guerrillas have not yielded many results.

"I asked my friend who works as deminer, but he has no idea what the rock is," Sok Sareth said.

I just thought everybody's results of great steaks, roasted chichen, paella, sangria, tappas, cerveza generated a cloud of methane gas that had higher density than air. Un cafe con leche con Anis could be the fuse:):) All you need is somebody lighting a ciggie.

Meteorites don't fall.

Oberon, everyone falls. That's what forgiveness is for.

It was a warning shot across the bow from Pope, after the Spanish Defense minister's comments regarding the faith.

If only we had ratified the Kyoto protocol, things like this wouldn't be happening. Like everything else, it's Bush's fault.
