PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: It's snowing in Washington today. The President and First Lady attended St. John's Church this morning before heading back to the White House to continue monitoring events in Iraq.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

In great numbers, and under great risk, Iraqis have shown their commitment to democracy. By participating in free elections, the Iraqi people have firmly rejected the anti-democratic ideology of the terrorists. They have refused to be intimidated by thugs and assassins. And they have demonstrated the kind of courage that is always the foundation of self-government.

Some Iraqis were killed while exercising their rights as citizens. We also mourn the American and British military personnel who lost their lives today. Their sacrifices were made in a vital cause of freedom, peace in a troubled region, and a more secure future for us all.

On behalf of the American people, I congratulate the people of Iraq on this great and historic achievement.

President George W. Bush, speaking to the American people from the White House today.

Here is a link to the complete transcript of the President's Statement on the Iraqi Election.

He and his troops and administration -- not to mention the Iraqis themselves -- worked dam hard for this day, with tremendous sacrifice. It's a GREAT day, and the TURNOUT just gives me chills.

I think it was everything he could do to keep from bursting out into a BIG Texas sized grin!

My thoughts exactly. He was dignified and solemn but he sure couldn't hold back that sparkle in his eyes.

Take that Kerry/Kennedy and shove it.

You're right!

If this was 1945, I think we would be talking treason here.

But I will take solace in the fact that he and his buddies will be proven wrong again and again and again, until he is completely exposed as the out of touch dinosaur that he is.

...wouldn't it be nice to hear more TV commentators recognize today's wonderful, historic event is happening because of George Bush

I have to laugh at how many of our very small, pampered media "stars" ran over to Iraq in the hopes of covering a disaster. Instead, they are having to at least report that the day didn't go as badly as predicted. Harumph!!!

I, too, fear the worst, mostly due to what I hear about the number of troops that could have been on the plane, and also due to what the British authorities seem not to want to say...just yet...even if they know it.

I have NO doubt in my mind that Edward Kennedy is now officially a TRAITOR.

He has always been a louse, but now he is a betrayer of his country, and he should be punished as such.

It has indeed been a great day as you say violence much less than expected.

We do not know if the British aircraft was attacked as yet or if it was mechanical failure but the site is secure and the investigations are already underway.

I think we can safely say the success in Iraq is a great birthday present for the Vice President.

I'm praying that you're right and the plane was carrying mostly crates, etc. and very few of your Brits. I'm also praying for the families of the fallen heros.
