Help Me Find Story On Liberal Writer/Editor Who Wanted More American Soldiers Dead In Iraq
Posted on 01/30/2005 11:01:05 PM PST by RavenATB
I'm engaged in a little debate on another board, and I need a bit of help finding a story that's a couple years old. I recall a writer and/or editor from what I thought was Salon.com who wrote an editorial admitting that he was hoping for more Americans to die in Iraq so the Democrats would gain political power from a "Bush defeat."
I can't seem to find that story by going to Google. But then, maybe my memory is faded enough so I'm not "Googling" with the right "key words."
I'd appreciate it if any of you could help me find this story.

I think it was Jonathon Chait, but you could probably pick about anyone.

Don't think it was Jenson. While he has already announced our defeat in Iraq I don't recall his calling for US deaths per se.

Susan Estrich also said on a Fox program or another that she hoped the war would go bad so that Bush would lose the election.

The Iron man would be ashamed of his Alma mater Sorry, my haste led to the above poor phrase. I should have said that the Iron man would be ashamed that this professor was at his Alma Mater.

Not sure who the exact person is, but you could say the entire democRAT party has expressed this sentiment in one way or another. Michael Moore is on record wishing for increased deaths of our soldiers too.

Thanks. I saw that earlier. Churchill is a long time activist in the American Indian Movement, so what he says can be taken with a very large grain of salt.

You can always drop
Nicholas a line and tell him what you think:
Nicholas De Genova is Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Program in Latina/o Studies at Columbia University.

You're after the wrong source. It was Ellen Ratner who said on Cavuto's show first week in January, 2004, that she "hoped" the war would go badly, and enough Americans would die, so "Bush will lose." Brenda Butner, sitting in for Cavuto, expressed surprise, and gave Ratner a chance to retract. She didn't.
Through Free Republic, I encouraged folks to write to Roger Ailes at Fox, since Ratner is a "Fox contributor." Some of you did that. Ratner was on the hot seat. She published a column saying she didn't mean what she said. She also called me to complain about my attacking her.
I think that's the story you're looking for.

I think you might mean this at
Salon.com, by Gary Kamiya:
I have a confession: I have at times, as the war has unfolded, secretly wished for things to go wrong. Wished for the Iraqis to be more nationalistic, to resist longer. Wished for the Arab world to rise up in rage. Wished for all the things we feared would happen. I'm not alone: A number of serious, intelligent, morally sensitive people who oppose the war have told me they have had identical feelings.
I would urge you to read the whole article before you pass judgement on him (he is admitting that those feelings are vile, and he is happy for success in Iraq)
