Making a list of the worst cars of all time, which we compiled last year, is easier than making a list of the worst cars currently on the market because, frankly, all cars are built pretty well these days. However, even now in the early days of the 2005 model year, several vehicles stand out for subpar performance in several important categories in some cases, matters of life and death such as safety. What follows is a roundup of the ten worst cars on the market, based on three criteria: the worst crash test scores, the lowest projected reliability and the lowest projected residual values. We thought about castigating cars for multiple recalls, but the 2005 model year is too young to do so (most recalled '05 models have been recalled only once so far). Furthermore, consumers often ignore such issues as recalls unless they are for universally dangerous reasons, such as spontaneously exploding gas tanks in favor of style, sex appeal or raw power. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the cars in the slide show are not particularly sexy. Several of them are among the cheapest cars on the market.

I just found out that I can quit my job, work for myself and then retire in 5 years!
How? I received an sub-contract to design and build mock-ups for Scion.
The last key was realized today. I received word from the local appliance store that I can have all their cast-off refrigerator boxes!
You can get the Avalanche without the cladding. Frankly, juvenile as it looks, it is better with the cladding than without. Now, the Aztek on the other hand...
"Anything built by Chrysler in the 80's was an absolute abomination."
I had an '84 Dodge Daytona Turbo. It never made it to 100k. I also had an '82 Mustang. Piston cracked at 70k.
I'm of the opinion that most of vehicles made by the big three in the '80 are definitely crap by today's standards.
Even my beloved Fiero was a pile until I rebuilt it.
And had a lot of sweeeeet car pics, too.
It must look really awful without the cladding, then. I think I'll have to go over the GM site and see for myself.
Yeah the avalanche is an abomination. It is a shame it is considered a truck/SUV. not to mention the blinker lights above the headlights make it look like it has eyebrows.
Every time I see the latest large Mercedes-Benz SUV, I hear the theme of "Hogan's Heroes" in my head.
Friend just bought a 2002 Chevy Malibu 4-dr (32k milies) at a wholesale auction for $6200.
Got to agree on the Scion. It looks like something from a bad 1970's sci-fi movie.
Anything built by the US companies from the mid 1970's until the mid to late 80's was crap. I owned a couple of them.
From and aesthetic viewpoint. Remember the 1961 Plymouth Valiant? Must have been a French designer. Fugly as hell!
Personally, I can't agree with any "worst car" list that doesn't include the Pontiac Grand Am and the Chevy Malibu. I get stuck with these awful vehicles sometimes when renting, and every time I do, I think it would be prudent to write a letter to GM's chairman asking him why GM can't produce a car these days that doesn't suck.
The guy in my office who has one says the same thing. It's still as ugly as sin.
"not to mention the blinker lights above the headlights make it look like it has eyebrows."
Ya mean sort of like the early to mid-'60s Chevrolet Apache trucks?
LOLOLOL!!!!
GM Rentals - Uncomfortable, cheap, lots of designer plastic. They all look the same.
The SS Diseased Liver
Right! The Honda Element is so ugly it hurts my eyes to look at it. LOL
