NEW YORK (AP) -- It took just a glance backstage at MTV's New Year's Eve bash for Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong to pinpoint the career stages of other acts on the bill.
There's the hot young thing, on all the magazine covers. The band in a sophomore slump. The critical darling that can't catch a break.
Then he locked eyes with a music veteran, riding a hit (he won't say who). They exchanged knowing nods.
These are heady days for Green Day. They knew while recording that their album, "American Idiot," was the best thing they'd ever done. Critics and peers agreed; it has six Grammy nominations, including best album. So did fans: the album has sold nearly 2.1 million copies in the United States and is approaching 5 million worldwide in four months.
Rarely does everything come together like that all at once. Green Day is a long way from the juvenile delinquents who wrote songs about masturbation and reveled in being pelted with mud at Woodstock '94.
(snip)
At a time the format seems to be dying, Green Day made an old-fashioned album that hangs together thematically, with recurring characters and moods. It's a disturbing portrait of Bush-era suburbia, the generation of "soda pop and Ritalin."

Anti-american song, but catchy.
Even when I was into punk music I hated green day. I suspect they still suck today.
OK, it's double platinum, but is that really that big a deal anymore for a known established corporate product like Green Day? I mean, it'd be news if an underground band sold that many records, but Green Day?
I am a part time musician. I do solo acoustic sets, bars, weddings, parties, etc. I do "Time of your life" by Green Day, and for now I've added "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" from this new record, but while I expect the older song to last a while longer, I don't expect this one to be remembered in a year. I could be wrong. But that's my gut on it.
The Buzzcocks were better at pop/punk than these chumps could ever dream of being.
Hey at least it's not RAP and R&B.
They're not punk. Real punk rockers make fun of them and Avril Levigne (sp?).
Damn they suck - and I'm not even getting to their politics.
the album has sold nearly 2.1 million copies in the United States
And you got about 18 million to go in order to catch Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction or AC/DC's Back in Black.
I wonder when this "garbage rock "crap is going to go away?
If it ain't Iggy Pop, it ain't punk rock.

I vote this the "Genius Post of the Day", as I agree with both points whole-heartedly.
They suck.
Do you have the time
To listen to me whine?
About nothing and everything
all at once
I am one of the those
Melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone
No doubt about it

They still suck, and always have sucked. They are bubblegum 3-chold pup-punk. The worst kind.
Even if they sang pro-American songs, they'd suck anyway. They are all complete tools. 'Tre Cool'? Sure, bro. Right on.
Bones
Green Day - Having a Blast
I'm taking all you down with me
Explosives duct taped to my spine
Nothings gonna change my mind
I won't listen to anyone's last words
There's nothing left for you to say
Soon you'll be dead anyway
No one here is getting out alive
This time I've really lost my mind and I don't care
So close your eyes
And kiss yourself goodbye
And think about the times you spent and what they've meant
To me its nothing...
It's cool to be a suicide bomber...
>"soda pop and Ritalin."
Not "soda pop"!! Cliched criticism of suburbia by Hollywood should be kept within a quota- perhaps they'll venture out and try something new. David Brooks writes about this (among other things) in On Paradise Drive- worth a read.
Any writer who can compare these poofter posers to The Clash is obviously ignorant of punk. These turds don't even hold a candle to the nonfamous 80's club bands, like the Penetrators, Tuff Darts, etc. They definitely do not rise to the level of the premier bands. These generic little bands just get so much hype today that the masses of pimply-faced younguns eat it up, never knowing that they are being spoonfed the retreaded sounds of superior bands.
"They're not punk. Real punk rockers make fun of them and Avril Levigne (sp?)"
Real punk rockers also have roomates to help pay the bills.
These guys made it and made it again. Real punk didn't.
