HATE SPEECH, UNLESS YOU'RE A LIBERAL

By now you might have heard the saga of Ward Churchill. This is the leftist America-hater that compared the victims of the 9/11 slaughter to Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi Holocaust murderer. In case you need a refresher, here's exactly what he said: "The most that can honestly be said of those involved on Sept. 11 is that they finally responded in kind to some of what this country has dispensed to their people as a matter of course. As for those in the World Trade Center, well, really, let's get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break."

He also went on to call the Islamic terrorists that attacked the World Trade Center, "combat teams," the victims "little Eichmanns" and "military targets." Obviously this terrorist-appeasing, left-wing sociopath does not belong on the faculty at a university supposedly teaching America's children.

Yet the liberals are playing the "academic freedom" card. He promises to sue the University if he's fired, and it looks like that might just happen. He has freedom of speech just like anyone else....he just doesn't have the freedom to make anyone listen. If you pulled this kind of stunt at a private company, you'd be out the door in a second. If you were a Republican, liberals would want to put you in jail for "hate speech."

Then again, it might be useful to keep him right where he is. It serves as a reminder just how these leftists actually think.

Churchill's degrees are from Sangamon State University in Illinois. It was an extremely radical left-wing school; no grading system, just faculty evaluations. Courses were open study. Then they found out that nobody would hire their graduates. It's now part of Illinois State University and its radical days are forgotten.

Churchill should be fired for many things.

If lying to students about known facts, if providing those lies in a manner that embarrasses the university, lies that are nothing but anti-American political propaganda, isn't cause for termination, then what is?

If lying to the student body in the course of providing instruction isn't a cause for termination, what is?

If his instruction cannot be trusted, why keep him?

He lied that he is an American Indian.

He lied about his Vietnam service.

He has a rap sheet a mile long.

He defaulted on his federal student loans.

Even as recent as just late last year he had a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in court.

He lied to a court when he said his race was "Indian".

He has called for the violent overthrow of the United States government; with a picture of him hold an AK-47 assault rifle.

If all that isn't grounds for immediate termination then the University of Colorado has no standards, no merit, and no integrity.

Free speech should be protected, but all speech has consequences. Lying to students and faculty has no place in an institution of education.

The problem is, if they fire him, they undermine the tenure process and tenure is an easy way to keep salaries down. (Since there's usually one university in town, nobody's going to want to take the chance that administration might decide your research area is out of fashion, so you'd have to pay people through the roof to take an academic job without tenure possibilities -- at least for real professors, in the sciences.)

The easiest thing is kill his department and put him in one that will not be so friendly to his teaching requests. I'd prefer putting him in the math department to teach remedial algebra. I suspect he's woefully unqualified.

Boortz hits on a critical point here. He states that Churchill has the right to say what he wants. He does, of course. However, the taxpayers, and the university which employs him both have the right to insist that he not say it there. That's the part of "Freedom Of Speech" or "academic freedom" these pukes seem to forget. The right to say it doesn't necessarily mean it's the right thing to do. Others have every right to not listen to you, and to insist you do it elsewhere. The government cannot step in and arrest or harrass you for your views. That would violate your freedom of speech. Private citizens, however, have every right to protest, to insist that you be fired, etc. Leftists choose to ignore that inconvenient little fact.

I hope he does get fired, and I hope he sues. It'll be fun watching the system he's milked for so many years finally get some karmic retribution on him.

Funny thing is, you addressed this to ME, and I'M one of the biggest fans of CHANGING THE WHOLE DAMN SYSTEM NOMATTER WHAT. Pay for Merit, merit, merit. PERIOD. The VASTLY improved productivity of the citizens will in time more than make up for the costs of hiring REALLY PRODUCTIVE PROFESSORS.

Academics will not judge on merit. Trust me, they sway to fashions and trends at the slightest breeze. I see this in mathematics. For a while, biomathematics was the hot thing. It's crap. Now it's Industrial Applied Mathematics, which is supposed to be mathematics without proofs, which is basically just engineering for people who are actually smart.

You assume that there's an objective standard in academics and there is not. And if there is, it will not be followed by academicians, your proposal would simply lead to left-wing academics declaring to be "productive" other left-wing academics.
