Prof: More 9/11s May Be Necessary
CBS ^ | Feb. 6, 2005

(CBS/AP) A professor who likened World Trade Center victims to a notorious Nazi suggested to a magazine that more terror attacks may be necessary to radicalize Americans to fight the misuse of U.S. power.

In an interview Ward Churchill gave with Satya magazine, he was asked about the effectiveness of protests of U.S. policies and the Iraq war, and responded: "One of the things I've suggested is that it may be that more 9/11s are necessary."

The interview prompted Gov. Bill Owens to renew his call for Churchill's firing.

"It's amazing that the more we look at Ward Churchill, the more outrageous, treasonous statements we hear from Churchill," Owens said.

"I don't believe I owe an apology," Churchill said Friday on CNN's "Paula Zahn Now" program — his first public comments since the University of Colorado began a review that could lead to his dismissal.

Meanwhile, Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., and Eastern Washington University canceled plans for Churchill to speak on campus, citing public safety concerns. Stephen Jordan, president of Eastern Washington University, declined Friday to say whether specific threats had been made.

Churchill defended the essay in which he compared those killed in the Sept. 11 attack to "little Eichmanns," a reference to Adolf Eichmann, who organized Nazi plans to exterminate European Jews. He said the victims were akin to U.S. military operations' collateral damage — or innocent civilians mistakenly killed by soldiers.

"I don't know if the people of 9-11 specifically wanted to kill everybody that was killed," he told Zahn. "It was just worth it to them in order to do whatever it was they decided it was necessary to do that bystanders be killed. And that essentially is the same mentality, the same rubric."

In an interview published Saturday in the Rocky Mountain News, Churchill added, "This was a gut response opinion speech written in about four hours. It's not completely reasoned and thought through."

Churchill said his speech had been misinterpreted. "I never called for the deaths of millions of Americans," he said.

The furor over Churchill's essay erupted last month after he was invited to speak at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. The speech was later canceled.

Churchill, who recently resigned as chairman of the ethnic studies department but remains a tenured professor, said he would sue if he were dismissed.

Satya identifies Churchill as a Cherokee and a longtime native rights activist. The magazine's Web site says, "One of Churchill’s areas of expertise is the history of the U.S. government’s genocide of Native Americans—the chronic violation of treaties and systematic extermination of North American indigenous populations."

I would think that requesting more 9-11 attacks against America would be grounds for TREASON!!

What's amazing, Governor, is that a state supported school was so freaking stupid as to hire this clown.

He's half right, more attacks would (further) radicalize Americans. However the object of their ire will not be their government, but rather radical Islam. How they would give vent to this ire remains to be seen, but I wouldn't want to be Mecca, Medina, Oom, etc, when the venting begins.

I don't think it would just be radical Islam. If the Michael Moores and Ward Churchills and Nick De Genovas and the rest of their Hate America First crowd ever get America the bloody defeats they wish on us, I would not be greatly surprised (or greatly saddened) to see them hanging from lamp posts in the subsequent weeks.

It never occurs to him that, if we are really as terrible as he thinks we are, that additional terror attacks might just push us over the edge into genocide? After all, we are the country that:

* almost completely exterminated the Native Americans inside our borders

* firebombed Dresden into a firestorm that killed literally all of its inhabitants

* reduced every major city in Germany to rubble (I went to Berlin before the wall came down, and saw what was left of East Berlin (which had not been rebuilt the way West Berlin had been)

* firebombed Tokyo into a firestorm that killed tens of thousands in one night

* dropped, not just one, but TWO atomic devices on Japan, incinereating complete cities, and then threatened to keep dropping them on every city of Japan until they agreed to an unconditional surrender

* shelled a column of about 10,000 refugees on a road in Korea with 155mm howitzers because it was hiding less than 1000 North Korean soldiers trying to break through our lines, resulting in the death of thousands of civilian refugees

* built over 100,000 atomic warheads for possible use against every major city (and military installation) in the Soviet Union, with the objective of reducing an entire continent to contaminated rubble if the Russians attacked us

Seriously, the best thing this guy could do is to convince the Militant Islamists, and the so called Moderates as well, that we may be polite and patient and seem like "girlymen", but if they don't stop provoking us, paraphrasing the words of Admiral Yamamoto, they will "awaken a giant and fill him with terrible resolve".

For example, if a rogue sect of Islam contaminates one of our cities with a radioactive "dirty bomb", they may find a rogue sect of Christians might contaminate a certain religeous site in Saudi Arabia with enough radioactivity to make a Haj a suicide event for the next 1000 years.

I am reminded of a story I read many years ago in which a witch hunter in the 1600s caught a young woman and tortured her to get her to confess being a witch. Finally the young woman, tired of the pain, confessed that she was in fact a witch. Then she looked left and the shackles came off; she looked right and the shakles came off; she looked at her feet, and the shackles came off. She looked at her torturer and said, "And now for you, little man!"...

The moral of the story was, if there really were witches, the last thing in the world you would ever want to do would be to find one and make them angry.

Many of Islam claim that the US is the Great Satan --- would they continue to provoke us if they really believed that we truly were evil ... especially since we still have so many ICBMs with HBomb warheads?? If we truly were as evil as they say they think we are ... what would stop us from blowing up more than 1 billion people in order to get at the 10 million that are dedicated to our destruction?

I have to conclude that these people are literally insane, because ... on the one hand, they believe that we are so evil that they must kill thousands of us ... and yet they believe that we will restrain ourselves from killing the 90% of the Muslim population in order to kill the 10% that are attacking us.

His engagement at Eastern Washington University set for April was cancelled by the school out of security concerns. There are legitimate concerns that someone will whack him.

What do you think would've happened to this professor if...instead of the broad generalizations he used, he wished ill-will upon Gays, Blacks or Jews? I can guarantee we wouldn't be having a debate about his 1st Amendment rights. In fact, losing his job would be the least of his concerns as some would be talking about his prosecution under existing hate-crime statues.

It is a good point you raise, and a similar one I've made to Leftists in America proclaiming that we are a police state that suppresses all those who dissent from president Bush's views.

Were that true, one would fear to whine about the President on online chat boards, or at least in public demonstrations...

The response I've seen by the Left has been silence. Leftists don't address the point, and frankly, one has a hard time coming away with any belief other then that they know deep down they are lying.

Islamists may be a very different story though, and I've never seen a forum of any sort where the question you address to them has been asked.

Certainly the United States could nuke Mecca tommorrow, or with a bit more difficulty, destroy the entirety of the Arabic world. What then is staying our hand if not some level of humanitarianism?

This is the crap that political correctness has given us. If a conservative professor expressed opposition to affirmative action, he'd be accused of "racism" and "hate crimes." But when this leftist a**hole spews his hate-filled, pro-terrorist lies, what we hear from the liberal media is basically, "He has a right to free speech, but all you politically incorrect people who are criticizing him don't!"

I think many people don't realize the magnitude of evil in what this sorry excuse for a professor is saying. He praises the murder of thousands of innocent human beings, and calls for more terrorist attacks on more innocent people. He's the one who's a Nazi.

This makes me think of a scene from the movie Witness, with Harrison Ford. Some jerks are harassing and abusing some Amish people, knowing that they won't fight back. The jerks start abusing Harrison Ford's character(who's dressed like an Amish), and they don't know that Ford's character isn't really Amish. Anyway, when they start abusing him, he beats the crap out of the jerks. I think that would apply perfectly to this situation. The crap that Churchill's done is so extremist and hate-filled that he deserves a beating.

There are different degrees of leftism, and different ways to deal with them. With an ordinary liberal, debate will do just fine. But with a fanatical hatemonger like Churchill, debate won't work because an asswipe like him doesn't understand the language of civilized human beings.

If he ever visited the campus in my city, I would think of the little children who died on 9-11. I would think of our brave soldiers who gave their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then I'd go over and kick Ward Churchill's ass. I know I'd get arrested, and I know I'd get a lot of lectures on how that was the wrong way to do things, but it would be worth it, just to have the satisfaction of beating the crap out of him.

They say that there are some people who need a good ass-whooping. If there ever was someone who did, it's this guy.

This guy is a stupid member of the "Unholy Alliance" as described by David Horowitz in his book:

***********************************************************************

Unholy Alliance
by David Horowitz
Regnery Publishing, Inc.; ISBN: 089526076X
Hardcover - 256 pages (September 2004)

In this tour de force on the most important issue of our time, David Horowitz, confronts the paradox of how so many Americans, including the leadership of the Democratic Party, could turn against the War on Terror. He finds an answer in a political Left that shares a view of America as the “Great Satan” with America’s radical Islamic enemies. This Left, which once made common cause with Communists, has now joined forces with radical Islam in attacking America’s defenses at home and its policies abroad. From their positions of influence in the university and media culture, leftists have defined America as the “root cause” of the attacks against it. In a remarkable exploration of the “Mind of the Left,” Horowitz traces the evolution of American radicalism from its Communist past to its “anti-war” present. He then shows how this Left was able to turn the Democratic Party presidential campaign around and reshape its views on the War on Terror.

Horowitz’s Unholy Alliance, writes John Haynes, the noted historian of American Communism, “is an insightful, brilliant examination of the mental world of the radical left. Horowitz shows how today’s radicals, unwilling to reflect on the internal flaws that destroyed Marxism-Leninism from within, have embraced an all-consuming nihilism in its place. This has led them to a hatred of American institutions and a solidarity with Islamic terrorists that makes the radical left more properly regarded as dangerous than loony.”

Unholy Alliance is an eye-opening book that should unsettle conventional assumptions and reveals why intellectuals and political leaders who applaud Michael Moore are no laughing matter. As Harvey Klehr, author of Venona: Decoding Soviet Espionage in America, writes, “The world Communist movement may be moribund, but its habits of mind and ideological fantasies have not disappeared. This is a fascinating and depressing account.”
