Funny. They introduced the BDU the year I enlisted and announced its replacement on the year I'm retiring. I think I might even have some of the original BDU's I was issued in Basic.
Doesn't matter much when your PointBlank vest has a 3 inch velco closure, over your BDU top.
Plus, buttons are difficult to work if your vest is on. Try putting a 15 pound vest on, then try to access pockets on your shirt under that vest. Not easy at all.
Having served in the Air Force and now working for a company that does nearly 100% with the military, when you do find a woman that makes BDUs look good, it's a beautiful thing. Kinda like finding a four leaf clover.
Æ
Every base I was ever stationed on offered free patch/stripe sewing. I felt a lot more pride when I had my rank on sleeve than I did when I had it written on a patch.
LOL, I went into the Air Force the same year they brought out the BDU. The group in front of me still had the greens.
Gotta admit, they were pretty comfortable but lord o' mercy, flattering they were NOT!
:-)
Any bets they had to pay the Marines a royalty on the patterns. They were copyrighted by the Corps.
Never heard of that free sewing/stripes...Just dropped one off last week, $9.50 for sewing and $4.00 for stripes plus whatever it was for nametag, USAF, and badges....
The Air Force BDU is undergoing a change as well and it will have a bluish tint to the camo pattern. Sorry I don't have a pic to post of it.
As for the Navy, does that mean the dungaree is going away?
It's sort of a love/hate thing with the dungaree. Looks OK when kept up well, but pockets are useless and the material fades too easily and that makes them look terrible as well.
Where the Marine Corps leads, the Army will follow.
Try the parachute shop. They've always offered free sewing, as far as I know.
Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on a set of the new BDU's. Army clothing is some of the most comfortable duds out there, IMHO.
You need to get out more often, GEN Shinseki has been retired for some time now. CSA is GEN Schoomaker
Shinseki has been gone for a year and a half. His concept of a new touchy-feely Army hardly took the United States Marine Corps as its model.
"Where the Marine Corps leads, the Army will follow."
An Army Ranger was on vacation in the depths of Louisiana and he wanted a pair of genuine alligator shoes in the worst way, but was very reluctant to pay the high prices the local vendors were asking.
After becoming very frustrated with the "no haggle" attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the Ranger shouted, "maybe I'll just go out and get my own alligator so I can get a pair of shoes made at a reasonable price!"
The vendor said, "By all means, be my guest. Maybe you will run into a couple of Marines who were in here earlier saying the same thing."
So the Ranger headed into the bayou that same day and a few hours later came upon two men standing waist deep in the water. He thought, "those must be the two Marines the guy in town was talking about." Just then, the Ranger saw a tremendously long gator swimming rapidly underwater towards one of the Marines.
Just as the gator was about to attack, the Marine grabbed its neck with both hands and strangled it to death with very little effort. Then both Marines dragged it on shore and flipped it on its back. Laying nearby were several more of the creatures.
One of the Marines then exclaimed, "Damn, this one doesn't have any shoes either!"
I have seen the USAF new BDU, looks like the Aussie uniform from the late 70s/early 80s....
Why the Army ever abandoned the Class A uniform from the 1940's beats me.
Those "greens" were called "Work Utility" uniforms...how funny was that...the cotton ones were comfortable....
I only see one guy in the picture, with his back to the camera. What gives?
The Chapel usually has a program that provides sewing to E-1 to E-4s.
