O'Malley Blames GOP Plot For Rumors (MD GOVERNOR'S AID FIRED FOR FREE REPUBLIC POSTS)
Washington Post ^ | 2/9/05 | Matthew Mosk

Posted on 02/08/2005 8:34:15 PM PST by crushkerry

Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley yesterday accused agents of Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s administration of spreading false rumors that he had an extramarital affair, and Ehrlich responded hours later by dismissing a longtime employee.

The mayor, a Democrat considering a bid for governor in 2006, said he believes that the widespread and persistent rumors were part of a "concerted and orchestrated and sustained" effort and called on the Republican governor to apologize to his wife and children. "I don't think any of us run for office expecting that this sort of hurt will be heaped on our kids or our spouses," O'Malley said.

Ehrlich said an apology was premature and denied any personal involvement in spreading the rumor. He then asked for and received the resignation of Joseph Steffen, a longtime aide working in state government. Steffen confirmed yesterday that he had discussed the rumor on a popular conservative Web site and in private e-mails, which were given to The Washington Post.

No offense taken, AVnevis.

Perception is reality - and the fact you asked as quickly as you did just shows the "reality" of the situation as you perceived it,...and the reality of the situation is why I had to get out: Before EVERYONE asked if the Governor was behind any of the rumors. He wasn't, of course.

Yes, some anti-freepers have posted a "bio" on me. Most of it was wrong, but it is creepy how they remember stuff. One guy brought up the fact that I am not a home owner (gasp) and mocked me for being a "renter". Pretty lame. I recalled posting something about that 2 or 3 years ago....and he clung to that info as if it were important.

I am not worried about my identity being exposed...I even have my photo on the home page.

If you mention, even on different threads, even over the course of five years posting on FR, that you have five kids (oldest in 10th grade), you were born in March, you live in Lincoln, Illinois (population 16,000), you drive a blue Chevy Tahoe and your first name is Stan, then you have identified yourself.

From my understanding your scenario is how they found out who Buckhead was.

I myself decided after that incident to dis enroll and then enroll under another user name to protect myself.

Too bad you had to quit, but I am sure you will have no problem finding a new job. Good Luck.

I hope and trust you will be rather busy rather quickly...(BTW.. Do I get a late night prize for TWO "Rathers" in one sentence.he won't be rather busy rather soon, if ever again..)

Do what works best for you, after the sewellign goes down and the wounds heal..but since MD politics is so one sided.. I think the blog thing has big possibilities..and it can pay off fro you..and best of all, you could do a thread on FR to help you choose a title for the blog..you chold do a net survey ti see what's out there, if anything..remember, the laws of science have been changed forever..nature, and the web, both abhor a vacuum..

What can I say other than the Governor had no knowledge whatsoever of any postings on FR. For the record, I offered to resign before being asked to do so. And, no, I have not spoken directly with the Governor about any of this.

The Baltimore Sun will be running a piece on this as well on Wednesday. They called Tuesday night and were ready to pin the whole thing on the Governor, and I couldn't let that happen because it simply isn't true

You are a man of honor and courage. The governer was lucky to have you while he did.

I can relate. There is some AFer who keeps insisting I said something that I have absolutely NO memory of saying - and I don't even believe it's something I WOULD have said (at least not the way she is presenting it...maybe she just isn't very smart and misunderstood). I was pretty creeped out when she kept repeating it on another forum over and over, like she was fixated on it, and me.

Even though I don't remember saying this thing (nor do I remember ever talking to her before she was banned here), whatever I DID say must have really gotten under her skin.

Kind of pathetic, really.

LOL. All I know is that I was once called a boring "turgid tard" from a hick town in the frozen tundra of the Midwest(with brain to match). Creative. I'll give them that much. Oh yeah. I'm supposedly an Elmer Fudd wannabe....hehhehhehheh

How in the world did they find out he was NCPAC?

Very easily, he probably posted them from work...which were traced, very easily to his computer

According to my married daughter, who lives two blocks from the Mayor O'Malley's house and is also well-wired in the communications/entertainment industries in Baltimore, the Mayor's dalliances are about as described. Apparently his wife has not left him (as yet). Power has its privileges.

My daughter has no information about the other side of this rumor, that the Police Commissioner is a drinking/carousing buddy of the Mayor. Isn't it odd that the Washington Post gleefully rubs its hands over the firing of the Governor's aide, but neither states nor investigates the subject of the Mayor playing the horizontal rumba with a member of the press. NOT.

"Very easily, he probably posted them from work...which were traced, very easily to his computer"

That's rather silly. All they would know is which websites he visited. The only way they could link what he posted is to have what is contained at this end. No, they found him through Richard Viguerie:
