In the wake of activist lawyer Lynne Stewart's conviction yesterday, several defense attorneys said fear of prosecution could now hamper zealous defense of unpopular clients, including suspected terrorists.
Others agreed with prosecutors that Stewart crossed a line that made her situation complex.
Activist attorney and radio talk show personality Ron Kuby, who once represented Stewart's client Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, said the verdict will intimidate attorneys handling unpopular political clients.
"It makes it that much more easier for the government to intimidate activist lawyers," Kuby said. "The threat of 20 years incarceration is a terrible deterrent against zealous advocacy."

Yep, this means that even lawyers can be convicted of a crime when they are guilty of one. Being a 'lawyer' does not mean you are above the law as many lawyers seem to think.

Yep, and that's exactly what she did. Sometimes I wish our Filth (misspelled with intent) Column would just grow a pair and openly revolt instead of playing all these games (smacks own head in frustration).
unpopular clients are unpopular for a damn good reason
Why should Lawyers be exempt from punishment for illegal behavior----Are they without rules for conduct---are they not responsible for deviant behavior???

Some attorneys seem to hide behind the shield of the attorney–client relationship in the same way as reporters hide behind the 1st Amendment.
Lynne Stewart is a traiter, pure and simple, and she's lucky to have gotten off so lightly. I only hope this trend continues and EVERY activist attorney is locked up for 20 years. Next target, activist judges.
In the words of the great Senator from Wisconsin, Uncle Joe McCarthy, "Traitors are not gentlemen, my good friends. They don't understand being treated like gentlemen." I wish Uncle Joe were alive today. I would love to see how the great Senator would have dealt with such anti-American hardcore Socialists like Lynne Stewart.
"Zealous defense" of criminals is what has gotten our country in the position it's in with the legal system. The Constitution guarantees a "fair trial" not a zealous defense. The right to a fair trial now means "use any means, trick, convolution needed to get the criminal off".
Yep. The First Amendment is weakened by the very people who cling to it as if it was the only right we have. Liars, fools and traitors...
